KAIP, Need advice!

Single SRA (possibly staff when i arrive), no wife, no kids, 22y/o. Is the extra cash really worth 2 years there? I've heard nothing but awesomeness from single people, but i have to wonder. 2 years w/o vehicle, most likely living in the dorms, curfew. It'd be like i moved back in with my parents.

Anyone done the KAIP and have any feedback for me?

Cool Re: KAIP, Need advice!

Gumby! I was 19 when I came to Korea my first time. This is my fourth time, and I am retired from my first career, USAF, and well into another.
Everything depends on you, and your goals in life, and in the military. At 22, and as a potential Staff Sgt, you are off to a good start!
There will be all kinds of people giving advice. I need to know at which post or base you will arrive, and what you expect to do to further your long range goals before I can give you useful advice.
Two years in Korea can work for or against your long range goals. Good luck!

Re: KAIP, Need advice!

Arriving Osan April 10th, 303rd IS. Basically my 6 year enlistment is up May 09, so i have 13 months left when i arrive. CJR's are becoming non-existant for my AFSC, so im contemplating crosstraining, or extending under the KAIP.

KAIP=about 6K to my savings account
Xtrain, end up stateside = loss of about 7K in COLA and incentive pays...

*sigh* just a hard decision

Re: KAIP, Need advice!

I don't know why anyone would not want to stay in Korea? Are you really worried about the curfew that much that you'll give up money? A car is not really needed, bikes are the way to get around for close and the train can get you anywhere in Korea for cheap.

I'm glad I done it. Saving money and in a place I like.

(CJR is Career Job Reservations) Guess you still are working on your short term goals, and need to figure out the odds of being able to stay in your AFSC (read MOS for Chucksnee) or change to another if selected as eligible to re-enlist by your supervisor. Work closely with the Air Force Contact Center at (800) 616-3775 (Option 1,1,2), (210) 565-5000, or DSN 665-5000.
Decide your options and career possibilities including schools. Good Luck.
Remember, unless you set a goal, it is nearly impossible to reach it!

I spent the majority of my AF Career in one school or another! I was in school in California while many were in Vietnam! I didn't plan it that way, but when I volunteered for Vietnam, they told me shut up and go back to work!
(I was in Satellite Tracking, and they said there are were no jobs for my AFSC in Vietnam!)
So I spent 1963-1968 tracking satellites and going to college at night on base at Vandenberg AFB. The next year I went from SSgt to 2nd Lt.

Re: KAIP, Need advice!

Osan is great, but there are some dangers involved. Osan downtown can be addictive to some people. I’ve done three tours there and my wife is Korean, but I’ve seen many an airman destroy their career by being stupid. They all say that it won’t happen to them, but the next thing you know we’re standing in the Shirt’s office and the kid is losing a stripe for a fight, or breaking cerfew, or finanaces. Just don’t be the one that goes crazy and can’t control themselves. Also, Skivvy 9 is notorious for this stuff so be extra careful. Good luck.
