Hi all! First, I wanted to say helpful boards, I've lurked a few times since my first trip to Songtan last January.
I have a question that I'm hoping to get a quick "yes you can" or "no you can't" answer to. :) I am a civilian (US citizen) contractor working on Osan AB. I am actually a rarity in that I am an American contracting with the ROKAF, and not the USAF. Being a civilian and working with ROKAF, I don't have access to an APO. However, I was wondering if it is allowable for me to get something shipped to me as a General Delivery to the Osan AB Post Office? Or is even General Delivery only available to military personnel? Thanks for any help! |

I am an authorized Military Postal service user, an Army Civilian Employee. There is no longer such a thing as "General Delivery" overseas, even for military. I tried that as I was coming over, and all mail was returned. I could not even get a mailbox number by sending a copy of my orders. I had to arrive and sign for a box. I can understand the problem, as there is such a turnover of personnel here. I am told that the U.S.Postal service is only in the U.S., and the Military becomes our postal service from the U.S. to here.
Military servicemen and women serve as our "Postal Workers". Their level of dedication to duty is about the same as the box kickers in the U.S., in my generalizing, humble, personal opinion. They are undermanned and overworked during peak periods. Lots of stuff gets misread and misdirected. Unfortunately, you are completely out of luck! Korean mail is your only option. We are not even allowed to receive mail for you in our name or box. We could lose our mail privileges, plus get a federal conviction. Korean mail is not bad at all, and you can write in English. With the proper address it works fine. There are thefts, just as there are in the U.S. mail. Computers and such must be heavily insured, as many get stolen. There are Korean UPS Trucks and Fed EX showing up in Seoul now, so check that out. I suggest you get your ROKAF UNIT ADDRESS and ZIP CODE, and do as they direct you. Foreign English teachers are all over Korea, and they use Korean mail all the time, so don't worry. It is more expensive, but you should be getting good money- more than the young long haired school teachers! There are centralized Mailboxes in some computer centers where you could get a Korean Mailbox for a fee. |

Re: General Delivery to Post Office for civilian?
Thanks for the reply! I was fearing that would be the case, but figured it wouldn't hurt to poke around :)
Yea, if it comes to it, I'll just have things shipped to my hotel address (my company already does this for some things). I just wanted to see if there was a legal way to save a little $ first. Thanks! |
