Voip Questions -Again

So I know that Vonage is no longer authorized on base in the dorms.

I heard that some compainis *like* Vonage are ok though. Anybody know anything about that?

Trying to make plans.

If you want the official list of allowed companies go here: http://www.usfkforums.com/general-ko...highlight=voip

#4 on the document has the names of the companies allowed.

Re: Voip Questions -Again

I know this subject is getting old, I'm sorry.

I heard that Skype is not actually illegal. Is that true?

Re: Voip Questions -Again

No it is not true, Skype is not registered as a Korean company... that means illegal. The bottom line is that NO ONE really cares about this stuff, and there is virtually no way to enforce the policy so get what you want and just be quiet about it. I used both Skype and Vonage the entire time I was on Korea without incident and I know people that have gotten new service from both and used them in the last week... without incident!

The agreement was all about money, and the Koreans are being really, really dumb about all of this. I am still in disbelief at how often and how quickly the USFK leadership capitulates to whatever it is the Koreans are complaining about this week or next week.

They keep talking about making this a "normal" tour of duty, and then they keep turning around and making it more and more difficult to live normally... so who exactly would want to fly half way across the world just to be treated like a 6 year old?

Re: Voip Questions -Again

I just wanted to add. There is another option out there called magicjack. I got it for my husband and brought it with me when I went to Korea to visit. It cost 40 for the whole year and then 20 after that. The only downfalls are there are not as many area codes to chose from and your computer must be on to work. It is still in beta, but I think its a great deal.

Re: Voip Questions -Again

Skype is not a VOIP service...it uses a totally different protocol than Vonage. A briefing from our Communication Squadron a few weeks ago gave me the impression that if you get Vonage, it will work. Up until 20 Jun 2008. Then LG-Dacom/SSRT will start blocking the Vonage IP. I am sure there is a way to reassign IPs and ports. Hacking into a Vonage box is pretty straight forward.

Or just use Skype, which uses the same protocol as Yahoo Voice, AOL, MSN Live, and any other text/voice/video messenger service I left out.

Re: Voip Questions -Again

I thought if you already had vonage you would be "grandfathered." Are we now going to be blocked this coming June?
