bored
So I've been at Osan since Feb 06. My husband and I just had our first child and its been wonderful, the only thing is that I don't have any friends here. My husband works so much that when he does have a day off all he wants to do is lounge around the house. Anyone have any ideas of things I could do to not be so bored...how can I get out there and meet other women/moms. Help stop the boredom!!

Re: bored
Congrats on your baby!
I hear there's a playgroup that meets at the Youth Center on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:00. You might take a swing by there and have the chance to meet some other moms. If I can think of any other ideas I'll let you know! Kara |

Re: bored
Have you ever been? Is it just like a free thing and you just find things to do, or do they have things set up for you to do?

Re: bored
I've never been, but from what I understand it's free, and the kids run around and play (I think they have like a jumpy castle and what not), and the parents sit around and shoot the breeze.

Re: bored
I've also not been myself, but I was just talking to a gal today who goes every Wednesday and she said she takes her 14 month old and they have the balls and gym mats out and everything. Nathan will be crawling around before you know it and be able to play with the other kids, but I'm sure they wouldn't turn you away if you showed up!
Is there a breastfeeding support group on base here? Lots of bases have them, and then you could meet some new moms. Or, just go to the park around the time when school gets out and I'm sure there will be some moms there, with older and younger kids. Good luck! Kara |

Re: bored
Have you considered volunteering?
There are definitely organizations on base that could use your help. Some volunteer opportunities allow you to bring your child with, or offer child care while you're volunteering. You can check with the volunteer coordinator at the AFRC for more information about opportunities available, and for info about volunteering. Right now, I know the cookie crunch is looking for volunteers, as is the Thrift Store on base. The chapel is also looking for volunteers to help in various positions. Our own "Wife of Barnes not Noble" works there as the Protestant Coordinator (I think that's her title, not sure, her office is in the Chapel Annex) and I'm sure she'd be more than happy to help hook you up with information and paperwork about opportunities there. Besides volunteering, there's the on-base playgroup others have mentioned, as well as several different programs, including a MOPS program, available through Mission Baptist Church downtown, you might contact them for information about what they have available. While it's not a long term thing, ITT has some great shopping and day trips you could also check out. The Enlisted Spouses Club meets once a month in Seoraksan Towers, and is open to all enlisted spouses, regardless of rank or sponsorship status. They sponsor lots of activities throughout the year, and often work with the OSC for special events such as Wild West Night, etc. Does your husband's unit have a spouse's group? If so, you might be able to get involved there..some here do, some don't, but if your husband's unit has one,it's a great way to meet other spouses not only at the same base, but in the same career field. Dee :) Edited to add: You might also look into taking some college courses. The education office on base has some excellent courses available here at Osan, however, if childcare for your baby is an issue, you could always try an online course. There are several colleges that will give you credit for your previous military experience, and CCAF courses that you may have taken, and will allow you to work around your own schedule.
