Re: Housing Information

There's just really not much to do after the curfew times on base, unless you're going to the Mustang, or Challenger clubs, which are open until the wee hours of the morn. A services bus, free to club members runs shuttle between the front gate and the clubs until 3 am, I think, for those coming in who still want to party. Occasionally there's a midnight movie, but that's not a regular occasion. So, all in all, yeah, you can still move around the base after the curfew hours...there's just really no reason to, unless you're into the party scene. :) Dee :) |

I live off base in one of the nicer apartments in the immediate Songtan area. By immediate, I mean within a 10-15 minutes walk from the main gate. Almost everyone in my building is in the military, ranging from junior enlisted, to senior enlisted, to officer. The downside is the constant construction they're doing to our building. And as recently as today, my pregnant wife informed me that while I was at work, a strange man came to our door and started banging on it and tried to forcefully open it. I don't know why she didn't call the police on him... Our next door neighbors, also military, were robbed about 5-6 months ago. Didn't know about that before moving in. Don't expect there to be any elevators within the immediate Songtan area. May not seem like a big deal, didn't seem that way to me at before I started living here, but groceries and furniture can be very very heavy. In my opinion, the main selling factor for on base housing, aside from zero bills no matter how extraneous your consumption rates, is the safety of the area. There are alot of really nice apartments with 24 hour security in Korea, but it's not within walking distance of the base, which is okay if you drive. Also, driving here is insane. And there seems to be a smell to Songtan that never goes away. I would personally recommend the Humansia apartments. About a 10 minute bus ride and a 40 minute bike ride to base. I'm sorry I cannot provide a link for you. They're new, spacious and full of appliances. If you don't already have a certain appliance (i.e. an oven) your realtor can probably coerce the landlord into getting it for you. As far as on base housing in the new towers, this is all the info I could find: http://www.osan.af.mil/library/facts...et.asp?id=6919 Good luck to you. |

Re: Housing Information
Thanks for the info! After 10 years at Osan so far, my husband has no desire to live on base - I think he lived on base for one year only out of the ten. And I am of the mind that if I am going to live in a country, I want to EXPERIENCE it! I prefer full immersion.

A couple questions... We did 5 years in Germany and lived on base, so that is my only comparison. We've never lived on base for any of our CONUS assignments. - Are there storage cages or similar for things like bicycles, or do you have to keep them in your apt? - Is the laundry community/shared, or do you get your own W/D in the apt? - Are there facilities for outdoor BBQ? Grills, etc? We love to grill :) This was one of our favorite ways to spend time with neighbors in Germany. - PETS.... are they allowed in the towers? We have 2 big dogs, and the kids and husband are just beside themselves thinking we may have to give them up. Any other pointers you want to share would be great! This will be our last tour before hubby retires, so we're really looking to get the most out of it!! Last edited by J-Bo : 04-04-2008 at 02:49 AM. |

Re: Housing Information
The base is not moving anyone into Mustang Village(MVV). People have been moving into to SEK(I am not even going to try to spell it) tower since March. We move in next week. Depending on family sizes depends on your unit. There are three towers total. One opened a couple years ago, the second in March and the third should open some time this summer. Each apartment has washer, dryers, and dishwashers in them already. They do not have a microwave. So if you have one bring it or you can purchase one in the BX. If you live off base and are command sponsored the base with issue you a washer and dryer. We currently live in Union Villa apartments. LOVE THEM! Our landlords agent rep is Arnold (From Hanmi Realty)and his number is 031-611-0469 or 011-803-5638. We are away from the base and the town so it is quite(about 5 miles).
Why are moving on base? Parking is AWFUL on base. The base is a "walking" base. Plus we have a 3 year old and we are on base alot with her for play groups and so on. I will miss my spacious apartment but I can't wait for the conveince of being on base. Happy moving! Sorry I don't have any info on floor plans. They do have great storage and each apartment has a storage cage on the floor that they live on. I hope that I have helped!! |
