Apparently the "Terrorist" who killed a ROK Marine, stole a vehicle and a military weapon, ammo and grenades was ALMOST captured today. I don't have more, except he appears to be of Korean ancestry. He is in a LOT of trouble.
(I just revised this to ALMOST Captured.) They now say he evidently was injured somehow, perhaps when he accosted two marines to steal their weapon. He went to a hospital ER and was treated. He disappeared before the police came. They are still searching for him. Last edited by Mr. Joe : 12-09-2007 at 08:21 PM. |

Re: Osan lock down???
Here's another article published in the Korean Herald (9 or 10 Dec) about the incident and what the Korean govt is doing....
Manhunt for soldier killer accelerates The manhunt for a soldier killer intensified over the weekend. The military and police accelerated their efforts after a man killed a marine and stole his gun on the western island of Ganghwa on Thursday night. But the lack of good clues means that the suspect was on the loose for the fourth day yesterday. The joint investigation team said it embarked on background check into 10,321 people who had served in the victim's military unit since 1989. The assumption is that the assailant was familiar with the unit. Another soldier was badly injured in the same attack, and remains in the hospital. "We are planning to first search people who have the AB blood type among those 10,321 people," Bae Sang-hoon, the police chief heading the investigation team, told reporters. Investigators yesterday concluded that this is the killer's blood type, after examining a blood stain on an ear protector of the dead solider, he said. The authorities are concentrating on identifying the suspect by examining DNA and fingerprints that were lifted from the killer's cap, which was found at the scene, Bae explained. Police think the attacker worked alone, but said they are still considering the possibility of an accomplice. The fugitive, thought to be in his mid 30s, speaks in an inarticulate Seoul-Gyeonggi dialect, according to witnesses. The government yesterday convened an emergency ministerial meeting to discuss measures to cope with the weapon-theft issue. The attack has sparked security concerns among presidential candidates, as they fear the stolen weapon may be used in an assassination attempt. At the meeting, police officials reported that they have fortified the security at major national buildings such as Cheong Wa Dae, the central government complex, and the National Assembly, as well as at over 18,000 financial institutes and 2,000 other sites frequented by citizens. In order to protect presidential candidates, the police has also doubled or tripled the special squad members and undercover police officers, it said. The Joint Chiefs of Staff on Saturday deployed 600 special forces around Hwaseong, a city just south of Seoul, where a jeep presumed to have belonged to the suspect was found torched. "This is the largest number of special troops deployed for a mission since 1996, when the military conducted operations to chase down North Korean guerillas in Gangneung. It is part of measures to seize the killer as soon as possible," a JCS official said. The military imposed the highest-level alert, "jindogae hana," in the Seoul-Gyeonggi area after the attack. The military and police set up roadblocks and traffic checks in the area, as well. The Marine Corps Veterans' Association yesterday pledged to assist in the seach for the killer, and is mobilizing its nationwide network. The group said it sent the police sketch of the culprit to 241 local branch offices, with instructions to maintain a vigilant lookout on the streets. On Thursday night, the attacker drove a jeep into two Marines who were walking from a guard post to their base on Ganghwa Island, 60 km west of Seoul. One soldier died from the impact, and the other was wounded after being stabbed. The killer stole a K-2 rifle, a hand grenade and a box of live ammunition. The Marine Corps yesterday held a funeral for the murdered soldier, Park Young-chul, and promoted him by one grade to the rank of corporal. By Jin Dae-woong (davidpooh@heraldm.com) 2007.12.10 |

Re: Osan lock down???
The killer has been caught according to the Korean Herald
Soldier killer caught After a weeklong manhunt, police yesterday nabbed the man who killed a Marine and stole weapons last Thursday on Ganghwa island, 60 kilometers west of Seoul. The suspect, identified only by his surname Cho, 35, was apprehended in downtown Seoul hours after police retrieved all the arms he stole. Investigators said they secured a crucial clue to his whereabouts from a note found Tuesday in a mailbox in the southeastern port city of Busan. The note, written by the fugitive, gave his address and the location of the discarded arms. He burned out his jeep using candles to throw police off his trail, investigators said. In the morning, police found a K-2 rifle, a hand grenade, 75 pieces of live ammunition, and six rifle grenades under a bridge near a highway in Jangseong, South Jeolla Province, about 340 kilometers south of Ganghwa Island, where the crime occurred. A picture of the murder suspect taken from a closed-circuit camera last Thursday [The Korea Herald]"The serial numbers of the recovered items match those of the arms stolen from Ganghwa Island. We have found all the lost weaponry," an investigator said. About 1,000 police forces were yesterday deployed in the Jangseong area to search for the weaponry after investigators found the culprit's note. The military yesterday downgraded alert levels from the highest, "jindogae hana," to normal watch status. Coinciding with the reports of the find, presidential frontrunner Lee Myung-bak of the Grand National Party yesterday resumed street campaigns. Lee had refrained from public speaking after the weapons theft in fear of possible armed terrorism against him. In the note, the culprit offered to surrender to police sometime in the future. He also expressed regret for the dead Marine and his bereaved family. Based on the note's content, investigators said they were leaning toward a tentative conclusion that the incident was intended as a simple theft. Last Thursday, the attacker, thought to be in his mid-30s, drove a jeep into two Marines who were walking from a guard post to their base on Ganghwa Island, 60 km west of Seoul. One soldier died on the spot, and the other was wounded after being stabbed. The killer wrestled a K-2 rifle, a hand grenade and a box of live ammunition from the soldiers, placing the whole nation on high alert. The military and the police launched a nationwide manhunt for the culprit after the attack, setting up roadblocks and traffic checks on main roads and highways. Police have also increased security for major presidential candidates. By Jin Dae-woong (davidpooh@heraldm.com) |
