Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

Saw some e-mail traffic earlier this week, hundreds of questions from airmen living in one of the new dorms over by the Mustang club, wondering why their Vonage isn't working anymore. 51 Services had a reply in there, stating Vonage is not allowed here, and all the dorms on base will soon be following suit. I don't remember which number dorm it was.. I want to say 1446 or something.. one of the new tall ones near the Ginko from what I recall.

The e-mail also stated people who were assigned here and had their Vonage prior to 1 July 2007 just need to bring their contract stating they were a Vonage customer prior to then to the new location of LG Dacom (customer service @ the BX) and it will be unblocked for them. They also offered the "option" of buying the LG Dacom VOIP services.

Looks like this is the beginning of something really bad. So much for being able to talk to my family for a decent price.

Get Skype. It's a non-montly fee VOIP program. Been using it for 4 years now in USAFE, and it's saved me thousands of dollars.

Re: Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

You may want to check the LG Dacom web site if you haven't already. I'm coming over in July and was curious as to what I would need for communications. Their package deals didn't look too awful and using their normal (non-VoIP) service listed $.06 a minute calling the states. Maybe someone here can elaborate on the LG service if they have it. I'd like to know how it's been working out.

Cool Re: Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

Big deal. You still have the internet, and Yahoo. And you can get phone cards here for 6 to 8 cents per minute.
Don't forget to sell your expensive cell phone before coming here- most won't work in Korea. (Someone tell us which type is used here-I don't own one.)

Dude, ease up a little... this is your first post and you are already hostile??

You can easily use Skype, Yahoo, voipcheap, or a hundred other methods to talk to your spouse... it is really not that difficult, and it sounds to me like you have not put much effort into finding a resolution.

Re: Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

I know this is the Osan forum, but I've been trying to keep up with the Vonage ordeal. We're headed to Humphreys in July. Is it fair to assume that this thread applies there as well?

I've been using Vonage for a few years now, and hoping to just take my phone number with me when we go... think I'll have any problems? Did you have to already have it *in Korea* prior to July 2007.... or just prior to July 2007 period?

Would like to keep my phone number, but will start looking at other options if needed...

Thanks for any insight!

I sense a bit of hostility in your post, so I'll try to be helpful rather than make you look like an idiot. I'll chock it up to the fact you sound like you're in Korea on a non-volunteer status.

I agree with the others, Skype is the way to go if you want free calls to your loved ones. My wife uses it here in Germany and it works very well for a free service. Also, someone else mentioned telephone calling cards, which only cost about 7 cents per minute, which should be very affordable for you.
