Re: Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

My son has Vonage at Osan and emailed me in the last couple hours to tell me the whole base has been blocked. His buddy couln't find anything in his LG internet access service contract the allows LG to do this.

Isn't Skype really the same type of service (VOIP)? Vonage is more popular and its just a matter of time until they block Skype and all the other VOIP services. Will US based email be next?

Re: Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

This really sucks. I would say big deal if stupd skype worked and wasn't so full of static I could hear my husband. I am glad my husband is coming home in 2 months. The whole reason they stay free from North Korea is because of us so I think they should give the soldiers a break. This is absolutly absurd

Re: Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

LG Dacom, the Internet provider contracted by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, said it has no written contract and can’t offer VoIP until it does. LG DACOM spokeswoman Huh Mie-hea said the company plans to offer an unlimited VoIP calling plan for $34.99 per month plus a $10 monthly fee for phone rental, and customers must also use the company’s $39.95 per month Internet service. The service won’t include a United States phone number—one of the most attractive features of the U.S. VoIP services. Huh said those using LG Dacom’s plan from the States to South Korea will be charged at international rates because it is illegal for the South Korean company to issue U.S. phone numbers. Additionally, LG Dacom’s VoIP service will only be available to some military members living on base; those living off base will have to find other services.
Unfortunately, both on- and off-base located U.S. military members in South Korea may have to adjust to the higher cost and lower service quality offered to them through LG Dacom, since the company insists it is prohibited from assigning United States phone numbers by South Korean law.

Cool Re: Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

I suggest that you believe that this is Korea, and they are going to allow only the version of Vonage that they want, and it may cost more and you will not have a U.S. Number.
Be cautious about U.S. salespeople telling you that your cell phone will work in Korea. Most of you will do well to sell your phone in the U.S. and get a cheap one over here if you are addicted ot a cell phone, and can't be satisfied with the free internet services available.

Skype sucks cost to much and you have to by more hardware to walk around unstead of sitting in front of your pc.
calling cards suck too
20 bucks for 8 hours of talk time. not a good deal when you think about it. If you have a needed wife or kids or like me need to call more then 3 times a day 8 hours sucks and even if you pay 50 for 20 hours it goes fast. think about it if you talk 1 hour a day its gone in 20 days but most of us talk way more then an hour aday back to the states. then if you like me my Phone doesnt work in my room there for i have to go outside to use my Phone. So yeah i am kinda heated bout that and so glad that I have less the 30 days left here

Re: Vonage now officially BLOCKED in 1 dorm

I'm planning on using Yahoo voice when I get there. I'm buying a dual mode cordless phone that works on the regular phone line as well as USB connection to the PC. As long as you talk using Yahoo voice to another person with Yahoo voice, it's free. Otherwise, it's only like 1-2 cents/minute to call or receive from a land line. Seems pretty cheap and fairly easy to me....
