on or off base? what do you think?

hello all...

looking for advice. i am an officer -- coming to Osan this July. i have been in for 15 years -- and been overseas in Germay early. this is my first time in the Pacific. what are the housing options and what is your advice? is on base better? worse? pros and cons of each for a single guy?

tying to formulate a plan on what i should take for my one year remote tour and what i should leave behind and store. any advice on what i should bring? should i ship a car or just get one off the lemon lot there?

thank you all for the advice!

Bama

Re: on or off base? what do you think?

Buy a car here, for $1000 or less you can get a fairly reliable car that will get you all around Korea. Then when you leave sell it for $800. Happens all the time over here.

As for the barracks, i'm not sure how the AF does that. Someone on this board will help you out on that.

15 years you are either a LTC or a MAJ (P) so they may have special Senior quaters for you?

Just bring clothes and basics, people are leaving all the time and selling stuff.

Welcome to the site and ask away...

Chuck

Re: on or off base? what do you think?

thank you Chuck...roger on the car ... bringing a new toyota over there is probably not a good idea becuase the lack of car parts too...probably will sell our second car and just try and find something in country.

i am a LTC -- not sure about quarters but have heard they have single officers housing. just not sure if its better to be there or off base...from what everyone has told me here, off base housing is much better if you can afford. i think i will have the option becuase of rank -- but just dont know. still have not been able to contact my sponsor, but i dont have a RNLT till July so i have some time. leaving from Patrick AFB and the beach will be sad...but leaving paradise to somewhere new has me excited.

bed, TV, couch, and clothes is about the only things i plan on packing out. will try and do it like the old days and live off the land!

thank you again and look forward to any and all advice!!

Bama

Re: on or off base? what do you think?

Bama, they base your living cost downtown on your rank.....Each individual realtor KNOWS what you are allowed by rank....they will then show you apartments that fall into that catagory.

You may have your own room waiting when you get here...

Forget the bed unless you have a special bed that you want, takes up to much weight....maybe a couch....tv yes, clothes and alot of other smaller thing....

Some where in the Osan thread their is a "favorite 500lbs" thread....alot of usefull info there...

I'm sure others will chime in also....

There are ALOT of things to do over here, trips or just enjoying Korea in it's self, as always its what YOU make of it....

Again Welcome and enjoy! You'll have fun over here..

Re: on or off base? what do you think?

again thank you -- i am going to owe you a whole case before i even get there!

is weight allowance to Osan limited to 500 lbs for all unaccompied? do you know if allowance is based on rank? or regardless of rank?

so sorry for so many questions -- and over the next few months i think i may have a billion. i am working my way through the "mega" tread on the spouse link for new folks. there are like 200 pages...i am on page 62. best news so far is the number of resturaunts on osan ... and a Taco Bell! yes, i can make it!!!

thank you again.

I think you will be impressed with how advanced they are here.

Taco bell, BK, Subway, Charlies steak subs and best of all a Chilli's are on post.

Downtown Seoul and Chonan they have TGI Fridays, Tony Roma's and a few others...
