1st term airmen housing!?

okay so i ve read around and got the feeling that as an A1c ill be living inthe dorms/barracks on base. ive herd that getting off base as an airman is pretty unherd of. so my question is can anyone tell me about the barracks on base...? are they roomy, will i have a room mate?

im 27 yo. i came into the airforce alittle late. lol. ive owned 2 houses and the thought of living in compact dorm with another person just doesnt sit well with me.

oh and im 6'7'' 250lbs, so the whole twin bed- in a compact dorm- with another person sounds, well like shyt. i was hoping to bring my bed with me since i just bought a crazy expensive queen size mattress last month.

man living in a dorm i can take. but living in a dorm with a roommate......i dont think so.

I don't know what is in store for you, but I'm guessing if you are 6 ft 7'' and 30 pounds more than I, some accomodations can be made for you and your mattress! Just be kind and very nice to the people who can help you. Welcome to the forum!

Re: 1st term airmen housing!?

at osan you will have a sweat mate. your bedroom will be yours. in most dorms you will only share your bathroom and kitchen with your roommate.
as far as a queen size bed, it will not fit. By this I mean with the dressers night stands ect you will just not have the room. Plus you will not be allowed to move any furnature out of your room.

If your feet stick out of the single bed, you may have to get a medical doctor to prescribe a longer mattress. They let you enlist, so you have the right to get a good night's sleep. I'm sure you can find a way. Korea will be an exciting adventure for you on the weekends. You will enjoy it. Just be sure first to learn your job and do your best at it.

Re: 1st term airmen housing!?

thanks for the info. im sure that ill have a great time in osan, but the living conditions are the only thing that bug me. thats good to know that ill have a sweet mate and not a room mate. im not to happy with sharing a bathroom but i guess its not avoidable. at leaste ill have my own room. thanks for the info.
everyone tells me to know my job and stay out of trouble while im there. lol. ill try. im a plumber so my job is no problem, its the staying out of trouble thats bothering me. i should be okay.

thanks again.

It may be a little crowded in the living area, with a sweat mate, a sweet mate and a suite mate. As long as you keep them all out of your bedroom, all should work out well!
Good luck on keeping out of trouble!

LOL Mr. Joe on the Suite Mate comment!

ominaewu, Too bad you didn't get Kunsan. I have what used to be a double occupancy room. It's big enough for a queen size bed.

P.S. As CE, you're probably gonna be very busy while you're there with so many dorms to take care of.

Re: 1st term airmen housing!?

well i guess its just another adventure to look forward too.
oh man tell me about it! im sure that its gonna be crazy getting all the plumbing calls to the dorms! haha. the stories i have about dorm residents and their accidents, wow. how exactly does one flush 3 forks and knife int the toilet lol.

i hope osan has some of those bigger rooms. ive been told that over the last few years the base has been upgraded alot.

lets hope so.

I'll be headed to Osan at the end of this year. My MPF sent me a welcome package that explained some of the "rules" for Osan.

E-1-E-4 are normally assigned a suite mate.
E-5 - E-6 single rooms with shared bathroom
E-7-E-9 Single rooms with seperate living/bedroom/bathroom

0-1-0-4--same as SNCO's

I'm hoping I made that extra stripe this year so I can get the SNCO...I'm anal about being clean and hate the thought of sharing a bathroom.

This is my second tour in Korea. My first was at Kwang Ju and we lived in old senior officers dorms..they were sweet. Full size kitchen and bath w/tub, living room and bedroom.

If anyone gets asked if they want to divert to Taegu, Kwang Ju or another Det JUMP on it. You get to see what Korea is really like. I hated Osan when I would travel there because the people, IMO, did not represent the true people of Korea.

Travel down south to the coast and see Korea, not Osan.

See you in Osan, at 6'7" you should be hard to miss.

Re: 1st term airmen housing!?

yeah i feel the same way about the bathroom. sharing bathrooms has never felt right to me. ill put the charm on and see how it goes.

yeah im not to hard to spot, lol.

iv'e run into another dilema, one year or two. take the money or bop?
ive read into the KAIP program and it sounds good but i dont want my follow on to suck. id like to be able to pick where i go next. im being told that if i take the kaip for two years ill loose my bop and get stuck with a list online?

i have a friend at kunsan and he says dont goto korea without my follow on already approved. then again any extra money is great, as im only a a1c.
