PC TV tuners

Hi all. Time is ticking down for my July arrival and while perusing the threads, I noticed one from '06 stating that TV tuner cards in PC's will not work there. Can anyone elaborate on this? I recently bought a new computer which has a nice big flat panel monitor and a TV tuner card that I was planning on using for my TV. If it doesn't work, then I'm going to have to think about shipping a TV or using a cable box from the LG Dacom folks. Any inputs would be appreciated.

Thanks!
OJ

Re: PC TV tuners

I looked into those at one time but they seemed a bit pricey unless the price came down some. I was planning on getting the regular cable in the dorm and using my PC to watch the shows off the cable or the cable box. It was the driving factor in purchasing that particular machine.

Thanks for the input none the less...I'm still going to look at the slingbox idea.

Re: PC TV tuners

Yeah, I took a desktop over there to do the exact same thing and it did not work. Although, I honestly am not sure if it was a driver issue or not because I had to do some work to it when I got it back to the USA too. I had (well still have) a Slingbox that I ran from Colorado and it was perfect. When you break down the cost of a Slingbox vs. paying for BAD cable for a year, the choice pretty much makes itself. My only suggestion is to be sure you have a DVR of some sort with your Slingbox, and you will be golden.

I did not have DVR with mine, so I still ended up downloading most of my prime time shows thru bit torrent anyway.

Oh yeah, and there are a few very good devices out there to compete with Slingbox, so do your homework and think about what you might do with it after your tour is over. I took mine and planted it at my in-laws house, and I use it when I am on the road.

Re: PC TV tuners

My spouse got me a slingbox and got it configured here. We tested it out on my laptop w/ wireless connection. So far, the reception was good. If you put the laptop and a tV side by side there was a slight delay. But overall it worked. The true test will be when I get to Osan and set it up in the dorms. Wish me luck.

Re: PC TV tuners

A friend of mine uses a tv tuner card to watch AFN on his laptop. I prefer my slingbox.

mudkaw, make sure wherever your slingbox is setup you have the fastest upload speed possible. At home I was streaming at 3000k and here I stream at 480k because thats the fastest TWC uploads. It's clear, but definitely not the same.

Re: PC TV tuners

Oh and try not to stream it over wi-fi, use a cable if possible, that makes a difference.

a 480k stream is pretty good, I think the best I got was 7 or 800, but it was clear enough to watch just about anything. Football was a bit tough, but it was watchable.

Upload speed is only one factor, you are going thru a LOT of routers to get the signal from the USA to Korea, so it takes a bit of luck too!

Re: PC TV tuners

I said it once and I'll say it again...get uTorrent and then go to EZTV. best way to do it.

They have most shows and it's fast. Only about a day behind.

Re: PC TV tuners

Anyone ever use a Pinnacle PCTV HD? I thought of buying one of these instead of a TV card.
