Maybe I am just venting
Ok, maybe I am just venting but I feel that the bureaucracy here is a little bit out of hand. My wife is here NCS. She resides off base in an apartment not 5 minutes from base. My commander will NOT sign my form 13 to authorize me to live with her. His reasoning is that they want to discourage NCS people from comming so he needs to make it as difficult as possible. So basicly I have to break the rules to go live with her and "ghost" my dorm. It just seems like a huge waste of government resources since our dorm is at 100% and we have people in temp dorms. Do our Air Force leaders want us to be miserable?? I am a TSgt and should at least be given the opportunity to live with my wife at my OWN expense. Maybe I am just venting or is anyone else running into this?

Re: Maybe I am just venting
Honestly I understand the need/want to discourage people from bringing thier families over NCS. But once they are over here there is nothing left to discourage, they are already here. The only thing you are discouraging from that point on is a healthy relationship with your family.

Re: Maybe I am just venting
For many years...the scenario you described was basically SOP in 2ID. That's too bad that it's being done at an Air Force unit, presumably not located in Area 1.

Re: Maybe I am just venting
Well, its just sad that they are doing that to you. If I were closer your wife could hang out here to keep her busy. I hope it gets better!

Re: Maybe I am just venting
Wow, that doesn't make any sense. Especially since I had thought they were trying to make family coming over here more common.
Sorry that you're having to put up with it!

Re: Maybe I am just venting
I'm truly sorry you are frustrated.
However, I am the odd man out here - I have to say, you knew that you were taking a chance with the NCS move and unfortunately, it didn't work out the way you hoped. |

Re: Maybe I am just venting
That happens. There's a limited number of off base slots - most of them reserved for the linguists (who spend half their career here) NCOs and above on their second or subsequent tours.
The base is expanding to handle more command sponsored and will have to pick up some of the people from Humphries. They're not able to support everyone bringing their spouses NCS. We already have a ton. So sorry, but the commander's job isn't to make your life easier when you went against the rules. You took a chance and you lost. But even then, 5 minutes away is a lot better than 15 hours away. |

Re: Maybe I am just venting
WOW......
Anyway, my question is WHY is your wife living off base at YOUR expense? 2 years ago congress passed a law that states the military WILL pay for HER apartment, COLA and utilities. This does not matter if you are CS or NCS. If she is here then she will get paid. Now remember when the housing paperwork gets denied for you to live off base, that paperwork MUST still go through for HER to start recieving OHA/COLA and utilities, she will get paid through your check. If your command is not sending the paperwork up for that then they are wrong....plain and simple.....someone with alot higher rank than anyone in Korea made that decision and your command cannot deny that....

You may want to see your Chaplain first, to get a reading on what he may be able to do to assist you. If he has no easy answer, that is why the AF has an IG system. You may ask any questions to the AF Inspector General at your base in confidence, and without any fear of retaliation.
It is true that they may still wish to discourage younger folks from coming, but it will cost you nothing to ask questions. Things are changing, and USFK is leaning toward family unity. It is just that you are a pioneer, and precedent may need to be set. Good Luck! |
