Questions about bringing my family NCS
Hello,
Great Forum!! Thanks for all the great questions and answers! I really appreaciate it! I have a few questions that I am wondering about: - Does any one know if I get orders to Osan and bring my non command sponsored wife and kids, will they be able to shop at the BX and commissary and be registered in DBIDS? -Will I also be subject to the ration limit of a single person at the commissary, which if I remember right is about $450.00 a month, or the limit which applies to the number of people in my household? - Also, since I will only be able to ship 10% of my household goods, will TMO pay to store the rest of my HHG's? And if later on if I do happen to get a Commander Sponsored Position while stationed there at Osan, will the Air Force pay to ship the rest of my 90% HHG's in storage to me at Osan? Thanks again. Re: Questions about bringing my family NCS
yes they will be in DBIDS. You wife will be issued a ration card and she can shop at the BX and Commissary.
Your ration limit will be set at the number of people in you're family, not the individual rate. Ummm, lets see unless your orders say they'll store it (which is usually an accident) they won't pay for it. I don't really know anything about switching to CS, sorry, but someone will be along that does know shortly. :) |

Re: Questions about bringing my family NCS
Thanks for the information short lil chick.
Right now I do not have orders, or have I been selected for an assignment to Osan. I am gathering all of the information I can about going there with my family non command sponsored, just in case I can not get a CSP position. So the question I asked about this: "since I will only be able to ship 10% of my household goods, will TMO pay to store the rest of my HHG's? And if later on if I do happen to get a Commander Sponsored Position while stationed there at Osan, will the Air Force pay to ship the rest of my 90% HHG's in storage to me at Osan?" is an assumption from what I have heard and read. My buddy who PCS'd to Osan 6 months ago (Apill 2008) as unaccompained but still brought his family said the government stored his stuff at his last base. He did not get back to yet on if he gets command sponsored if the government will ship over his HHG's in storage. Thanks. |

Re: Questions about bringing my family NCS
Hopefully someone that's AF can answer your TMO question. I know that it's been talked about on here so maybe you can do a search. I seem to remember someone saying that you lose your storage option if you choose your next assignment after Korea. I could be totally wrong about that. I'm sure someone can help you.

Re: Questions about bringing my family NCS
Glad you are coming to Osan. I think you guys will love it here.
My husband and I are here NCS with our two children. We didn't have any trouble getting TMO to store our stuff from our last location. We're not interested in changing to a CS tour, but have several friends that have. Yes, the AF did pay to have the remainder of the HHG shipped here. The biggest problem I think they had was not being able to go back through their stuff and decide what they didn't want shipped. (ie: lawn furniture, etc) as the towers on base do not have a back yard. You might want to ask your non-temporary storage facility if there is a way to separate what you may want to stay in storage provided you are able to take possession of the majority of your HHG in the event of a change to command sponsorship. (How is that for a run-on sentence?) I totally spaced the rest of your questions so let me know if you didn't have everything answered. Good luck with your move! I think you'll find Korea to be a lot of fun. Take advantage of the many tours ITT offers and get out and drive on the weekends. You'll be surprised at the adventures you find. |

Re: Questions about bringing my family NCS
We are here NCS...been here just under a month. I was entered into BIDS and received my temporary ration card without any problem in less than 15 minutes. It was a completely smooth process. TMO stored the remainder of our HHG. =)

Re: Questions about bringing my family NCS
We came last year; my husband was NCS when they packed up our stuff. We had put our stuff, except for the 500 lbs in storage, at our own expense prior to getting orders (because we had a newborn and that worked out better for us), and the kids and I moved across country to stay with my parents until my husband found a place to live. After we got CS (I was still in the states) they moved our stuff from our old location into contract storage and also paid for a supplementary shipment from where I was staying with my parents. It was kind of a hassle; everyone we talked to acted like no one ever did anything like that, but in the end they did pay.
Good luck! Anna |

Re: Questions about bringing my family NCS
judging from talking with folks here and talking with families it seems like once you bring your family over NCS they pretty much just give you CS (edited after the below comment was posted thanks for pointing that out) automaticly. They are really trying to work the normalzing the tour thing here from what I understand. I think the catch is that if you get the CS the tour flips to a 2 or 3 year tour vise the 1 year tour and since they are closing all the NCO dorms and forcing everyone to move off base I would think doing the NCS thing would be the way to go you still get all the bennifits, including a (1) car, is my understanding, and the tour stays 1 year.
As far as storage the guy next door says that most likely that will depend on if A. the base youare leaving is the base you are coming back to if so then they will almost 100% of the time and B.if you just catch them on a good day. Either way, if I had my family here I would be one hell of a happy boy. And if my wife's didnt depend on her specialist so much we would be here NCS. Re: Questions about bringing my family NCS
NCS is not given to you, that is just a term used for people who are not CS.
