PCS with pets
We have a 4 yr old cat that we hate to leave behind. Has anyone PCS'd to korea with their pets? I know they don't need to be quarenteened, but we are more worried about the long flights.
I'd love to hear anyone's experiences. Thanks, -Brad |

Re: PCS with pets
From what I'm gathering (and again, this is -not- personal experience, but what I've gleaned from info from other sources, so you might want to double check me and just confirm this) in PCSsing to Korea with pets, you're looking at two difficult issues.. firstly, there's the immediate issue of what to do with your pet when you first arrive, as most billeting places, and hotels aren't exactly pet friendly, then with apartment living as it is in Korea, many of the apartment owners are "cracking down" on the presence of animals in apartments..but with the right landlord, I'm sure you could work something out. The second and most pressing issue would be transporting your pet.. many airlines won't accept pets during certain times of the year, and on certain flights at all, due to being unable to provide safe conditions for pets...so you may want to check with the airlines to see if it's even possible.
I would also recommend getting in touch with the base vet at Osan (I'm told there is one there) they might also be able to offer you more helpful information (Then again, they -are- military *EG*..) You can locate their number by going into your global email and searching for the unit there, it should pull up a -lot- of different offices... For what it's worth, I understand exactly how you feel about leaving your cat behind...we've made the difficult choice to leave our 2 dogs (one a 5 year old Boxer mix, named Beau, and the other a 12 year old toy poodle that I'm extremely attached to, as it was my grandfather's dog- I inherited him when my grandad passed away) behind. Both will be staying with much loved relatives, so I have comfort in that, but.. it really is hard leaving these canine and feline members of our family behind. Hope this helps.. Dee :) |

Re: PCS with pets
Bringing a small animal over like a cat shouldn't be hard at all. Your cat can travel with you as carry on baggage if he can comfortable fit under the seat, which most cats can. My dog isn't here yet but we will be sending him over once it cools down. The breed of dog we have did have a summer embargo. He could have come over in the cabin with us if he didn't weight 55 lbs.
But I have done a lot of research on this. Most airlines have their specific guidelines on their websites. Here's one. http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51255,00.html I think Osan has a kennel you can use until you find an apartment. Here's a link to that info. http://www.osan.af.mil/public/BaseGu....html#Boarding As far as landlords cracking down on pets I can tell you from my experience with the realtors around Cp. Humphreys we didn't have any problem finding an apartment to accept pets. Every one that we talked to didn't mind pets and they didn't require a pet security deposit like they do in the states. Just make sure you have the proper shots and documents when you get here. |

Re: PCS with pets
When my cat was shipped over here it was a little easier becasue I was already here. So my wife just got a plane ticket (cargo plane) and shipped him. The ticket was $212. I had to go through customs at Inchoen which cost me another $75 for them handeling the cat and other what not fee's.
As someone said above during certian parts of the year you cannot take them with you, but that depends on how long the flight is?? My wife could not take our cat on the plane becasue the trip was longer than 12 hrs. As for bording the pet while your inprocessing, Yongsan has a pet care center Commercial 01182 2 7916-7916 or DSN 736 7916. Here is the number for Osan, boarding kennels - Commercial 011-8231-661-6795 DSN (031) 784-6795 Most places will let you keep a pet. When I signed my lease I said BTW I have a cat and they had no problem with it. Hope this helps.
