Re: Is Osan Air Base an Assignment of choice?
Briannalc: You mentioned about 80 posts ago about the trouble with car seats and all of that. I would tell ya...hop on the train. There are so many things that you can take off and go do with your young children that are in walking distance of the 5 million train stations. For instance...45 minute train ride give or take...north to Seoul Grand Park and for 3,000 won each you are at a zoo that also has a children's petting zoo...take them critters up there to see the critters!

This is my first post on your forum! I have enjoyed reading all of your posts. I joined this forum because I found out tonight that my husband will be going to Osan AB for his "unaccompanied" tour. Of course I would like to go with him, but I just don't know what to expect. Can someone please help me understand how it works for me to go with him during his "unaccompanied" tour?
Thank you in advance! |

There are literally thousands of old posts on this forum you can go back and read about being non-command sponsored.
I'll let the young folks tell you about it. I live and work in Seoul, and I'm spoiled. I started out at Osan many years ago when I was 19. Eash person, each family will have to make the decision if one year unaccompanied is best for them or not. If you are a city girl, who doesn't like yellow sand smog and less than ideal living conditions, stay home and it will all be over in a year. If you feel the two of you need to be close all the time, even under stressful working conditions and a certain lack of amenities, and are eager to visit foreign places and explore the Orient, come on! |

Re: Is Osan Air Base an Assignment of choice?
I was there in 04 and loved it. I'm going back this August and this time I get to take the family. Yea, there is the whole Songtan thing, but you have to get up to Seoul. There is a ton of stuff to do. Also, I remember going to some lake not far from Osan. ITT has tons of tours that don't cost much as well. I would rather be at Osan than most stateside bases.

Re: Is Osan Air Base an Assignment of choice?
Just some observations, since I haven't been back to Osan in nearly 25 years. Far as I can tell, families may as well come to the base. With today's military increasingly being deployed to the Middle East, why not be somewhere with a great mission and where your family can join you? Also, Osan is one of the few places you can go in certain jobs, such as a Korean linguist. Many of them spend years in Korea and their families are with them. In addition, many commanders serve accompanied tours, so why not their troops? And having people spend more than one year at Osan saves PCS dollars.
