ISP/E-Mail

Hi everyone, I need some help here. I am not at Osan, but my spouse is.

We are trying to resolve an email issue. He is using his email settings for here on the east coast with cox. I have already spoken with them about the fact that he can receive email and not send. The outgoing server cannot be used. (unless some one has a work around).

How is your email/internet set up there? (dorms) He said they came in hooked up the wires and left. They didnt give any email settings or anything.

Any help would be appreciated. Gotta love trying to do this long distance.

Jen

Cool Re: ISP/E-Mail

Yahoo mail and Yahoo messenger work fine for me. Also G-mail (Google)and hotmail work and are free. Korea has super fast email you can get-there are some carriers in the US that will block any Korean email because a LOT of Spam come from here! Osanites will clue you in on what works best there.
He needs the company to help him set up locally.

Re: ISP/E-Mail

Yeah, I never used the ISP email. I always use the free web email like hotmail, gmail, and yahoo mail. You can also get a gimail account. You can check gimail account from the office computer.

Re: ISP/E-Mail

Another possibility is that the e-mail server for Cox would require "outbound" server authentication. I have this same problem in the US with Roadrunner.

However, I just did some research on Cox website and they do not offer SMTP (Sub Mail Transfer Protocol) (the thing that makes sending e-mail from username@cox.net) server authentication.

With that said, there is nothing you can do to send e-mail using Cox as your e-mail server and an e-mail program (Outlook). He still can use the web based e-mail system to send mail from his @cox.net e-mail account.

Hope this helps out.

Re: ISP/E-Mail

Make sure you have authentication turned on for the SMTP server. Also, is she getting a 550 "Relay not allowed" error?

There are a few other options, but that is the easiest place to start. Also, if you are trying to use that email from work it will NOT work. You will be able to receive only. I do the same thing from work, but I use the exchange server to send things out, and just set up a second reply address so that when the person I am writing to replies, I can still check it at home.

Re: ISP/E-Mail

Thanks everyone. We finally ended up setting his gmail as a pop account in outlook. So when he replies it goes out on that address.....everone will eventually get that as his new address. I find it to be better anyway, everytime we move its always a new email address, if we use the gmail it goes with us where ever we go.

Thanks again,
Jen
