Is Osan Bugged?

I'm curious what kinds of Bugs live around Osan and pests/mammals (besides dogs/cats) I can expect to run into.

Is OFF! something that is needed in the summer/spring months?

Does Osan have or need a mosquito control plan? Is malaria a problem? Are there any dangerous spiders or other bugs that we should keep a look out for?

Thanks in advance for the buggy insight.

Re: Is Osan Bugged?

There is really no big bug problem...however, during the spider season, you can get some pretty big spiders! Big ugly ones, little tiny ones...all over the place. There is one that does bite can give you a welt, but not too common. Mosquitos are all over the place at Kunsan. That "family or tropical" styled OFF! don't phase them. Deep Woods or even the Sportsman (99.99% DEET) will keep them at bay. The family brand attracts them. They will even get you through clothing. Little bastards!

Re: Is Osan Bugged?

They are here but I don't think they are that bad. I haven't heard of Malaria being a problem. I was at a cook out on Friday night and I just sprayed some Off on me and didn't have any problems after that. We're at Humphreys which is only about 10-15 miles from Osan and we also go to Osan a lot. We have mosquito trucks drive around here dispersing the spray, I don't know if Songtan does that or not.

Yup Yup... they do, we saw a truck going down our street one night this weekend dispersing the foggy stuff. LOL.. of course, at the time, not knowing what particular chemical they were using, it sent us into a mad dash to get *inside* our apartment, rather than breathe the stuff....but we haven't really had a huge problem that I've seen here, either, definitely not as bad as I'd expected from what I'd heard when I arrived.

I haven't heard of any cases of malaria, or west nile virus, either. They could be around, but don't seem frequent in any case.

LOL..now ladies, and gents, watch...we'll say this, and next summer, the ladies coming here will have a really bad mosquito year, and they'll swear we lied! LOL :)

Dee :)

Re: Is Osan Bugged?

There was a case of malaria about 5 or 6 weeks ago and I am pretty sure it was at Camp Casey, but I could be wrong. Check the electronic Start and Stripes archive for more details. http://www.estripes.com

Re: Is Osan Bugged?

If there is one mosquito around, it will bite me -- they seem to always bite me and no one else -- but I haven't had one bite this summer. I had to go out of the country to the other side of Russia to get bitten by mosquitoes. Go figure!

I was amazed at the number of dragonflies they have here though, but I'm told they eat the mosquitoes, so they can stick around!

Re: Is Osan Bugged?

I was also told by our Veterinarian that Korea doesn't have a flea or tick problem. While I was very doubtful about this assertion, I've yet to find a flee on our pup.

in my short time living in the dorms i killed two brown recluses.

and when the mosquitoes bite you, big welts show up and itch like no other. i spend alot of time chasing them into the bathroom and trying to choke them to death with lysol.

but it's winter now! nothing survives the winter...

Re: Is Osan Bugged?

Our one year old got bitten by mosquitoes so badly that it looked like she had the chicken pox. I am not kidding. I tried to attach a picture but it was too big. We had to go on a "mosquito detail" every night before bed and squash as many buggers as we could find. We were up to at least ten a night before the cold, cold came.
