I am an E-6, and my family will be staying in the States for the year I will be in Osan. Thanks.
Then you are coming at the right time as the majority of dorms on base are being renovated which will give you the option to move off. Off base you can certainly make money, but not with the OHA. OHA will be exactly what your rent is...but if you go directly from TLE into off-base housing you will get full TLE. Additionally, you will get a monthly electricity allowance which will more than cover the actual costs...saving more money. Bottom line; on base is more convenient, but you can definitely save more living off.

Good luck

Steve

Re: On Base or Off Base?

How are they determining who moves offbase and who stays onbase during the renovations? I'm a E-6 finance guy and when I was there two years ago we stayed in building 385. Are they kicking NCOs downtown so the Airmen can stay on base or is it a unit by unit thing?

Thanks for the information!

Is that fact? All NCO's have the option?

Thanks for the info, Ginger. I'd prefer to stay on base anyway.

Re: On Base or Off Base?

I just got here in Dec and before i got here i was so used to living by myself i was set on living off base. But then i got here and it was hella cold on day and that sold it for me. I live on base in the dorms if u can swing 712 or 300 series they are better they have little kitchens and smaller rooms with tiny closets. But again u have a kitchen with a oven/stovetop cupboards. They deduct 200 out of your check every month unless u r like command post and cant make it to the chow hall. Im okay with the dorms because its only a yr, its more convient if your plan is to go to the gym a lot or take classes on base, i wasnt looking forward to draggin those MOPP bags around, and you get free AFN and can get internet hooked up really quick if u live in the dorms. So again its totally up to you but i just find it more convient to live in the dorms.
