Michigan votes to shut-down Affirmative Action

A proposition to restrict affirmative action passed in Michigan today and got 58% of the vote. From CNN:
Proposed amendment to Michigan Constitution would "prohibit the University of Michigan and other state universities, the state, and all other state entities from discriminating against or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin." On June 23, 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision in Grutter v. Bollinger, ruled in favor of affirmative action in the University of Michigan's admissions policies. The Bush administration opposed the university's pro-affirmative action admission policies.

Re: Michigan votes to shut-down Affirmative Action

I think that affirmative action needs to be completely stricken from the record. What we have now is reverse discrimination. I am from Michigan and I had a friend (Male, caucasian, not that it matters, really.) who attended the University of Michigan, 2001-2005. I can tell you from visiting the campus numerous times that it is a HUGE mixing pot of race, culture, religion, etc... During his application process he was almost rejected because he was not a minority. The ONLY reason he was able to attend was because he was a resident of Michigan. Forget about attending if you are an out-of-state student. Every race in America has the equal opportunity to do as much or as little in this day in age. Sure, the schools in the city may not be as great as the schools in the suburbs, but last I checked the internet and books know no district lines. A decision should be based on a persons merit, their worth, their distinction that sets them apart from others should not be the color of their skin or their families heritage. The ability of greatness is instilled into every human being and it is their CHOICE whether or not to succeed. I believe in equal opportunities for everyone, but it should be earned not given.
