Japan: WW2 sex slaves were just camp followers
The source by AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE revealed more madness from Japan's ultra-nationalists.
Japanese lawmakers and academics protested on Friday against a US congressional demands for a clear apology over wartime military brothels, saying the women were not sex slaves but camp followers and it was not a human rights issue but a commercial dealing. In a letter to the US embassy in Tokyo, the activists say they were "surprised and shocked" by the pressure for a fresh apology to the "comfort women" in a resolution which they claim was based on wrong information. "No sex slaves existed," it says. "Professional camp followers were providing prostitution. There were only business organizations and prostitutes to make money from soldiers." Shoichi Watanabe, history professor emeritus at Tokyo's Sophia University said: "If America keeps saying this is a human rights issue, then what were the indiscriminate bombings on Tokyo and other cities? What were the atomic bombings? Compared with that human rights issue, prostitution in battlefields is only a commercial act." Rightwing author Kimindo Kusaka said women from Japan initially went to frontline brothels, but a shortage led to Koreans recruiting women from the "low classes" on the peninsula. "They paid when they recruited the girls," he said. "It was probably a severe blow to the girls, but it was their dads who betrayed them. It was their moms who betrayed them." What should we do about it?

There are two sides to every story. Japan doesn't want to admit slavery. Korea says it was slavery. They beat and oppressed Koreans for 36 years
but they will never admit they did anything but improve the country. There will always be a dispute over ownership of Dok-Do also. The Japanese will never give in. Korea has possession, anyway. No one will "Win" I suspect. Too bad. Look for something important to work on. Do you believe North Korea will "Give up" anything at the 6 party talks without "Demanding" something from the U.S. or South Korea? No! Last edited by Mr. Joe : 07-16-2007 at 07:35 PM. |

You are accusing us of not believing that they were slaves. That is unfair and inaccurate. Some of us believe it! Some of us know how cruel and inhuman the Japanese soldiers in Korea were. They were not the best soldiers of Japan. They sent some soldiers to Korea that they didn't want in Japan! My Mother-in-law was once imprisoned here by the Japanese and forced to work! Even though we do believe, there is little we can do now. It was more than 50 years ago. Japanese will never admit fault.

Re: Japan: WW2 sex slaves were just camp followers
The issues at hands aren't just about the Japanese denying their past wrongdoings. They're also making it looked as if they were doing the right thing. That's the problem.
Asian countries, especially Korea and China, are always concern about Japan's militarism. Justification of war by Japan would inevitably be seen as rise of militarism. Therefore, getting the Japanese to 'truly acknowledge', not half-hearted ones, their past misdeeds is a way of containing their militaristic nature. Every war requires moral justification. The Japanese are doing it, 'again'. They had mitigated, distorted and now beautified their war. This is a sign that will not go down well with its surrounding neighbours, even as far south as Malaysia and Singapore. We must get them to face up the truth. That way, they'll not be able to build up on the i'll-conceived, highly dubious 'moral high ground'. Without it, militarism will not grow on that path, again. That's something important we need to work on.
