This was a race against a Republican backed by President Bush and a Democrat backed by John Kerry and Al Gore.

With 68 percent of precincts reporting, Republican Brian Bilbray was ahead with 45,528 votes, or 49.7 percent, to Democrat Francine Busby's 41,198 votes, or 44.9 percent, in the special election to replace Randy "Duke" Cunningham, who was convicted of corruption charges.

Busby, a local school board member, focused her campaign on public dissatisfaction with the Bush administration and the GOP-led Congress, and assailed Bilbray for working as a lobbyist in Washington. She consistently referred to him as "the lobbyist Bilbray."

This is also the seat where a Republican went to jail and these two candidates where battling for the spot. All I have heard over the past few months is how the Democrats are going to take back the house and Senate and the Republicans are in trouble. Well, this election was in California and was full of scandal.
