Is Islam a tolerant, peaceful religion?

This is one of my biggest disagreements with President Bush.

If Islam is a tolerant religion, then why are 99% of people in Iran, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries Muslim? There are several reasons for this.

1. It is punishable by death to convert a Muslim
2. It is your duty as a Muslim to convert others
3. You gain government benefits for being a Muslim and loose benefits for being non-Muslim

Due to these reasons, people of other religions do not go to these countries or leave for a better life.

I also don't believe Islam is a peaceful religion. When you hear of a suicide bomber, is their any question of what religion the bomber chose? What other religion has a policy of "wiping countries off the map" and targeting civilians?

I also hear that "this is a small minority of radical people, not the religion." This is bogus! These radicals can not survive unless they are well funded by the "moderates" of Islam. The "silent majority" are not shooting or actively killing, but they are funding and looking the other way.

I also wonder why we send any money at all to the Palestinians! While Americans were dying by the thousands the Palestinians were celebrating. Why have we sent 100s of millions of dollars since 9-11?

Finally, Muslims will even kill fellow Muslims if it means they can kill a few Americans. Just today, Muslims killed 44 other Muslims in Iraq, just because they are not supporting the insurgency. Also, they are trying to start a civil war that will kill millions of Muslims, just to get America out of Iraq. Sounds peaceful and tolerant?

I am not bashing Muslims, but please don’t call the religion a religion of peace and tolerance!

the definition of irony

Mike,

Ironic to see this post this morning. ABC and the Wash Post released a study last week that cited a majority of Americans now feel that Muslims are disproportionately prone to violence. Claudia Dean and Darryl Fears wrote this article

Today, we're doing a debate on "Your World with Neil Cavuto" on whether the Media is responsible for the increase in negative perceptions of Muslim. Hopefully we'll have someone from the Muslim American Society who says its the Media's fault. We already have Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch and author of "the polictically incorrect guide to Islam" lined up. He says that if Muslims want people to think they're peaceful, they should stop killling people.

Religion of Peace? Not on your Life!

Too many misconceptions
Too many of us being fooled
By the time we start to understand that true Muslims believe that the only good Infidel is a dead Infidel, it may well be too late.
Take heed America!

I think that the majority of Muslims are peaceful. Meaning that they may not agree with someone who is non-muslim, but they will not kill them for that fact. In countries where religion is the only hope that one has in a life full of dispare the dream of 70 (or however many) virgins is very tempting. We (Western Society) must understand that eventhough we enjoy many of the freedoms that we do, muslims do not, and they will never understand why we fight and kill them so they can have them too. Islam is a religion based on many social classes, much like a monarchy. They are unable to understand that all people are equal and the sectarian groups are just that, sections.

Ultimately, we are only attempting to do what has been done for thousands of years. History repeats that we will fail, but not because of a religion.

The old saying, "We fear what we do not know, or understand" fits so nicely here.
