I was happy to see a Korean TV newsman yesterday say that Koreans shouldn't blame the Americans for the farmers plight. He said we didn't really want to go to PyongTaek. It was the Korean Government's idea for U.S. to move from Yongsan to Pyongtaek. He said the Americans have been protecting Korea for over 50 years, and we are the best friends of Korea. He said that we should remain friends, as Korea cannot trust Japan or China.
I thought that was cool. We were told here at Yongsan to listen to the Radio & TV for info, and that they anticipate making the Humphreys area off limits for Americans during any protest periods. |

It might have been this segment from KBS
mms://newsvod.kbs.co.kr/news/news_8a...04/300k/30.asf Here is the webpage with the video and the Korean transcript. It is an analysis of the base issue. Anyone with the Korean and English skill and desire to summarise what is said and paraphrase or translate key quotes --- please post it here and/or email it to me at usinkorea@hotmail.com I am collecting the videos and images for a review, but before I edit the videos together, I want to get the flavor of how the media is responding to the story. I can give a good educated guess. In fact, I'll be pretty suprised if I am wrong, but I still want to know what the tone is, and if I can get a few quotes from the press on it (whatever the good quotes say) I can integrate it with the video edit to help explain the dynamics of the anti-US / USFK culture. Here is the educated guess: The media is primarily happy to help use their college educated indocrtination about how bad the US has been net to Korea to help keep Korean national pride and anti-US feeling up. For example: they usually give exclusive time to quotes from people like The Priest and other anti-US civic leaders when it comes to issues like base pollution, GI crimes, and so on. They usually omit any rebuttal from USFK or anybody else, and I know from many examples in the past, USFK has tried to prepare material and bring reporters to USFK or Embassy areas to see things firsthand, but the material seldom makes it into the reporting itself. Anyway ----- but - when it seems USFK might be crumbling and actually thinking about leaving - or the international media starts talking about protests or strong anti-US quotes (or similiar tough words) from big name people - like President Roh ------ the media will play nice with the alliance and send the signal that it is not the right time to exercise pent up frustratoin and anger. I've already noted here how the Korean media has tried to get ahead of the curve with Pyongtaek by telling the people to be quiet and chiding the government for not doing more to silence the protesters. That is unlikely to change. But, in no way does it mean this type of news coverage proves Korean society as a whole is not anti-US in Korea..... You don't have to love the one you need nor the one your with........ |

Yea that was our back gate. What the protesters did not know was that while they were fighting with the KNP from the on-post side, they were being surrounded in a horse-shoe from behind by KNP.
The video of the van was put infront of the gate so the KNP could not get out of that gate, but it was finally moved.

Hey chucksnee My sons was told he would be leaving towards the end of the month now he is on a flight on the 12. Is that because things are settling down or the Levy section at Fort Lost in the woods got their head out of their posterior?

Holy crap in a hand bag! i went to change my cellphone today, thanks chuck, and then to subway, as i was heading out of subway for home i got passed by atleast 20 KNP buses!. at first i'm thinking "geez it seems odd that the americans can't even protect there own base" but on second though i relized it would look VERY bad if someone got a picture of an american defending the base and a korean getting hurt or worse.
i've never seen KNP that far on base before. i don't know what happaned at around 5-6ish our time but it was big... O.O i should watch korean english news... |
