Kim Jong-il Keeps No. 2 Spot in 'Worst Dictator' Ranking

I thought this article was very interesting.

Here are the main points:

Quote:
Kim again had to cede the top spot to Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, where a full-scale genocide is under way. Kim owed his ranking mainly to running "the world's most tightly controlled society." According to Reporters Without Borders, the country also wins hands down in terms of suppressing freedom of the press, while Freedom House highlights the utter lack of political rights in North Korea. The Stalinist country achieved its worst rating in 34 years. With some 25,000 people interned in forced labor camps, the country was also singled out for widespread food shortages which are blamed for a marked decrease in the physical development of children.

The magazine ranked Chinese President Hu Jintao sixth. Although some Chinese have taken advantage of economic liberalization to become rich, up to 150 million Chinese live on US $1 a day or less in this nation with no minimum wage. Between 250,000 and 300,000 political dissidents are held in reeducation-through-labor camps without trial, ¡n the magazine said. The government opens and censors mail and monitors phone calls, faxes, e-mails and text messages.
The U.S. got rid of Saddam, so that is one less! I am sure some Democrats think President Bush is the worse dictator.
