[USFK Forums] U.S. Still Dithering Over N. Korean Refugees [Chosun]
Uploaded by C. Y. Lee on Monday, March 20, 2006 U.S. Still Dithering Over N.Korean Refugees The Chosun Ilbo: Updated Mar.17,2006 19:16 KST The U.S. is still looking into accepting asylum-seekers from North Korea, according to Stephen Hadley, an advisor to President George W. Bush. The head of the National Security Council told reporters Washington had to consider a “trade-off” after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks between openness and national security in deciding whether to accept refugees from countries like Burma and North Korea. “And in many instances, we have not gotten the balance right,” he said. Headley claimed to be surprised when he heard from Congress that the administration remains far behind its target for accepting refugees this year. The adviser said the president “has given the secretary of state clear guidance that one of her challenges is to re-look at these things and make sure we've gotten the balance right.” url: http://english.chosun.com/w21data/ht...603170010.html |
