N. Korean diplomat seeks asylum with family in Hungary: sources

SEOUL, March 28 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean diplomat serving in Eastern Europe has sought asylum at the South Korean embassy in Hungary, diplomatic sources here said Tuesday.

The diplomat, according to the sources, is currently staying with his family and a number of other North Koreans under close protection of South Korean embassy officials.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, however, refused to give further details about where they were staying or how they came to the European country.

"Negotiations are now under way" to bring them to Seoul, they said.

North Korea reportedly requested the Hungarian government to ban its diplomat from leaving the country after it learned of his defection.
