3 U.S. envoys to talk about North in China

The JoongAng Daily

March 30, 2006 ㅡ Three U.S. ambassadors in the region will convene in Beijing in the next few days, diplomatic sources here said yesterday.

The American ambassador to Seoul, Alexander Vershbow, left Korea Monday for Beijing for meetings with Clark T. Randt, the U.S. envoy there.

They are expected to be joined today by Thomas Schieffer, their counterpart in Tokyo, the sources said. Robert Ogburn, the embassy’s spokesman, said Mr. Vershbow was in China for “vacation and consultations.” He said he had no other details.

The unusual meeting comes as the stalemate continues in nuclear negotiations to induce North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons and Washington shows growing signs of frustration over the breakdown.

North Korea has refused to return to the talks, citing U.S. pressure on a Macao bank that Washington said had laundered North Korean cash.
