Japan, Poland agree on cooperation over N. Korea, U.N. reforms

Monday April 3, 10:52 PM

(Kyodo) _ Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso and his Polish counterpart Stefan Meller agreed Monday to cooperate in resolving the issue of North Korea's abduction of Japanese nationals and step up efforts to reform the U.N. Security Council, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said.

They agreed to develop closer cooperation over the Security Council reforms, with Meller affirming Poland's support for Japan's aspiration to become a permanent member, the official said.

Poland was one of the cosponsors of a resolution compiled by Japan, Brazil, Germany and India last year to pursue their respective aspirations to secure permanent seats on the Security Council.

Aso expressed concerns over lifting the European Union's arms embargo on China, and Meller showed understanding over such concerns, the official said.

Meller is on a six-day visit to Japan wrapping up Tuesday.
