[USFK Forums] N. Korea Abductees' Families Sue Seoul for Damages [Chosun]
Uploaded by C. Y. Lee on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 Updated January 17, 2006 21:42 KST N.Korea Abductees' Families Sue Seoul for Damages THE CHOSUN ILBO - Families of people abducted by North Korea during the Korean War are suing the South Korean government for compensation because of its alleged failure to ascertain what happened to their loved ones. In two suits submitted to the Seoul Central District Court, relatives of victims demand around US$10,000 in compensation for each of the families of 10 civilians abducted by the North, and a designation of “meritorious individual” for the five civil servants who were abducted along with $5,000 for their families. “Over the last 55 years, the families of those kidnapped by North Korea during the Korean War have repeatedly asked the government to ascertain the status and fate of abductees, but the government has neither tried to investigate, which could have be done without cooperation from North Korea, nor enacted legislation that could restore the honor of the civil servants who were forcibly taken to the North,” the group said. They say the government failed to ascertain the whereabouts of a single South Korean abductee, nor were they allowed to meet their families during family reunions. “The government has deceived us, making it appear as if it was trying to solve the question of the abductees and prisoners of war while in reality only focusing on the 480 abducted after the war,” the group said. “Because of that, people have been under the mistaken impression that the government has been active in resolving the issue.” This is the first time families of abductees during the war have taken legal action. Those of postwar victims have already filed suit against the government. url: http://english.chosun.com/w21data/ht...601170031.html Copyright (c)2003 DIGITAL CHOSUN All rights reserved. I am not sure of the reasons however, I am not able to start a New thread. Therefore I must ride in on another thread. What is the general consenus of AAFES in Korea? ========================================== Dear Hiker: Sorry, your message is not understood. What is AAFES? I am inclined to believe Mike should take care of your question. C. Y. Lee on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 |
