[USFK Forums] Korean Judge Re-elected to Int'l Criminal Court [Yonhap-Korea Times]
Uploaded by C. Y. Lee on Saturday, January 28, 2006 Korean Judge Re-elected to Int'l Criminal Court The Korea Times, Friday, January 27, 2006 NEW YORK (Yonhap) _ A South Korean law professor and judge Song Sang-hyun was reelected Thursday as a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Six of 10 nominees were elected to nine-year positions, including candidates from Bulgaria, Finland and Ghana, raising the number of judges with nine-year terms from six to 12. The ICC has 18 judges with tenures of either three, six or nine years. ``I share the honor with the South Korean people, as my reelection is a sign of South Korea's global power, receiving great help from the government along the way,’’ Song said. Song, who is on leave from his position as a law professor at Seoul National University, was elected in 2003 to a three-year term at the ICC at its inaugural election by receiving the second-largest number of votes. He has taught South Korean law around the world, including at Harvard Law School in the United States. Based in The Hague, the ICC was established in 2002 as a permanent, independent judicial body to prosecute war criminals, crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity under international law. 01-27-2006 20:21 [Note by C. Y. Lee] His grandfather, the late Hyon Sang-yun who is his mother's father, was adcuted to North Korea during the Korean War, who was then president of Korea University. He came home late last year after his first tenure and was appointed as commissioner of International Trade Commission on December 8, 2005. (END) |
