U.S. Democrats vow redoubled efforts to stop N.K. nuclear buildup

2006/03/30 05:57

WASHINGTON, March 29 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Democrats on Wednesday presented national security plans that include redoubling efforts to stop North Korea's nuclear weapons development.

In what they called a comprehensive plan for providing "real" security that contrasts with the Republicans, Democratic Party leaders called for doubling the size of U.S. Special Forces and increasing human intelligence capabilities.

The plan says the Democrats will "redouble efforts to stop nuclear weapons development in Iran and North Korea."
U.S.-North Korean ties warmed under Democratic President Bill Clinton's administration, with Clinton seriously considering a visit to Pyongyang toward the end of his term.

Relations have soured in comparison under the George W. Bush administration, which labeled North Korea part of an "axis of evil" with Iran and Iraq and branded its top leader, Kim Jong-il, a "tyrant" and a "dangerous man" who sacrifices the lives of his people in pursuit of nuclear weapons.

The Democrats' plan says the party will "lead international efforts to uphold and defend human rights and renew longstanding alliances that have advanced our national security objectives."
