President Bush anger over refugee sent back to North Korea

This is a sad story and I am glad President Bush is at least talking about it because we all know the South Korean governent won't.

Quote:
Kim Chun-Hee may already be dead. If not, she is almost certainly languishing in a North Korean gulag after Chinese officials deported the young woman who dreamt of escaping the world's last Stalinist state.

Her fate is unknown, but her case has reached the White House.
Urged on by a powerful church group from his childhood home of Midland, Texas, President George W Bush raised her plight last week with Hu Jintao, the Chinese leader.
I think this paragraph says it all.

Quote:
Predictably, Mr Hu listened blankly to Mr Bush's comments during talks in the Oval Office, offering no response or comment - the standard Chinese approach when Western governments raise human rights concerns.
Here is the story behind this poor lady.

Quote:
Ms Kim, 31, knows all about the cruelty of Kim Jong-il's North Korea. Her five-year-old son died while she was in prison there, incarcerated as punishment after other relatives escaped to South Korea via China.
Last September, she also managed to cross the border into China and made her way to an ethnic Korean school, hoping to win asylum and to be allowed to join her family in Seoul.

But the school threw her out and the Chinese authorities arrested her.
A South Korean politician brought her fate to the attention of Jay Lefkowitz, appointed by Mr Bush as his special envoy on human rights in North Korea.

US officials raised her case with China, but were later furious to learn that Ms Kim was being sent back to North Korea even as their Chinese counterparts said her release was being considered.
It is not surprising that the U.S. talks more about the terrors of the North Korean regime than does South Korea. "Silent Diplomacy" allows for South Korea's economy to move forward, but looks the other way while thousands die each year and millions live in prison camps in North Korea.

Full story here.
