North Korea opens first bicycle plant

In an effort to reduce their energy demand, Pyongyang has opened their first bicycle plant. They will produce 300,000 bicycles a year.

Americans and South Koreans should start riding bicycles more! Americans never learned from the 70s oil fiasco and are repeating the same mistakes: driving cars that are not fuel efficient. South Koreans are repeating the mistakes of Americans and driving SUVs in mass.

It cost me $30 to fill my take yesterday. It was around $20 when I first got to Korea last December. :"

Dan, I agree with you to a point.

My basic idea is that GM and Chrysler almost went out of business because American made huge gas guzzlers and the Japanese built small, fuel effient cars in the 70s. Then OPEC did their thing and the rest is history! (Thanks Jimmy Carter!!!)

We are again making the same mistake. SUVs and Trucks have been outselling cars in America for the last 3 years. I know few people that actually use the space in these large vehicles. Americans drive around using 10% of their vehicle space. Have you ever driven in Hawaii? The bus in the most underutilized vehicle on Oahu.

The Japanese are leading the way in hybrid-technology. They will beat us to the punch yet again because we learned nothing from the 70s oil crisis.

Now, if I were President I would give billions to the car companies in grants. They would then have 3 years to produce cars that have a minimum mile-per-gallon of 40. Any car coming out of a factory less than 40 MPG would be taxed 100%, meaning a car selling for $20,000 would have to sell for $40,000.

I have a feeling the auto makers would change their tune real quick if I were President!
