Traveling with a Toddler
I will be coming to Korea in february and will be traveling with a 22 month old. Can I carry snacks on the plane for him? What about juice?

Re: Traveling with a Toddler
Yes, you can carry snacks on the plane for your toddler- we flew the day after Halloween, and since my little one couldn't bear to throw away *all* the candy he'd collected trick or treating, his carry on was loaded with a half a grocery sack full of sweets...(heh.. no, I wasn't crazy enough to let him have them *all* on the plane, but he nibbled on a few pieces en route)
Unfortunately, due to the current travel regulations, and security precautions, you cannot take juice, or even water, in the amount of more than 3 ozs. on board with you (the exception being breast milk). The airlines seem to be aware of the problems this can cause, especially for parents with young children, and seem, from what I've experienced, to have taken measures to accommodate patrons... they had plenty of juice and water, as well as sodas, available on my flight to Korea on Korean Air/Delta...as well as Kid's Meals, and Kid-friendly snacks. You might want to call the airline and request kid's meals for your toddler, as well as make a request for juice, just to make sure they have your child's favorite flavor on board. It doesn't add anything to the cost of your ticket, and just helps to insure your child has a good flight experience..which in turn, means that Mommy will! :) Dee :) |

Re: Traveling with a Toddler
You CAN bring juice/water on the plane with you. You just have to buy it once you've passed security. Every airport in the states I've been at have had lots of little shops inside where you can buy snacks and drinks for the flight. You shouldn't have a problem. They will have some juice on board, but if your child doesn't like the standard orange and apple, I'd do your best to find something else on the flight.
They seemed to have lots of food on board, so my kids didn't eat any of the snacks I brought with us. So, don't overload your bag full of snacks. But bring a few of the favs just in case. Oh, and if you are flying with a toddler, I find it a good idea to go shopping for toys before. Don't let the child play with anything before. Makes them all surprises on the flight. Then bring one out every little bit to keep him occupied. I bought some matchbox cars, books, and an aqua doddle. My kids LOVED that. And if you have a mini DVD player, definitely bring that. |

Re: Traveling with a Toddler
Everyone's experience is different but I wish I HAD NOT brought the dvd player and toys. My two year old slept almost the whole way there and my 10 year old enjoyed watching the movies that the airline offered. When my youngest was awake she was eating or transfixed on the tray/tv. So, in MY case all the extras for the kids ended up being just another bag for me to handle that they didn't even use. Needless to say on our return flight there won't be a bag designated to only entertainment. I'm realistic in knowing that I have to take a couple things for them to do...just in case but I certainly won't be bringing much.

Re: Traveling with a Toddler
Michelle-- I brought WAY too much, too. There will just be one bag when we fly back next month. Only 2-3 toys will be needed, and a couple of snacks.

When we flew back from Tokyo last month on Korean Air, they gave out little folders with stickers for the kids on the flight as well. A few little toys here and there, especially given your child's age, some age appropriate toys would be fine.. but I definitely wouldn't overload, you just end up carting more stuff around. I'll *definitely* be paring down my carryons for the trip back! Dee |

Again, however, either way you should have juice at your disposal... they do normally stock it on the plane, and if you make a request for a certain type of juice, the airlines will usually do their deadlevel best to get that for you, if you call them a certain time ahead of your departure. I'd definitely recommend calling the local branch of your TSA ,though, or your airline, it never hurts to just make certain. Dee |

Re: Traveling with a Toddler
I went through Spokane, Seattle, Reno, and San Fracisco, and as long as the fluids were purchased past security, they were allowed. I flew in February and March, so that is probably another reason. I brought on water for my kids, as well as a bottle of juice. I know my husband brought coffee on his flight over in February. They aren't nearly as strict as when the incident first occured that prompted the change.

Re: Traveling with a Toddler
Be aware that the plane you are on may not have the Movie players in the seats. I have traveled all over the world and only a couple of times have I gotten lucky enough to be on a plane with the movie player in the seat in front of me. So although it can be a heavy load, bringing the mini DVD player or just a laptop that plays DVDs wouldnt be a bad idea. Also, if you have a layover some place, this might be a good distraction. Just a thought from an experienced nanny who has done many overseas flights with kids under the age of 4...

Re: Traveling with a Toddler
I have to say the 13 hour flight over here was the easiest flight I have ever had with my kids. I kept them up the night before (which I know can be kind of a gamble) and the seriously slept most of the time. I didn't bring many toys, and the kiddies didn't play with them either. The plane I was on (Singapore Air) had a movie player in the seat, but only 2-3 movies that my kids could watch. But as I said they slept almost the whole time so it really didn't matter.
