But.........here are somethings to think about, will you be covered by tri-care if you get into an accident? What will happen to your husband if you get into an accident? Just a few things to think about, also when you came into Korea you recieved a SOFA stamp saying that you would obey all 8th army rules and regulations. As I said above, yes you can have a car and you must get a Korean DL, but is it worth it?

Re: driving-car question
They have buses that go up there all the time. Also, it's better to get around Seoul without a car. A car is nice, but the city buses and subway is quicker.

Just speculating, and not knowing your situation, I suspect that Tysmomma is a concerned mother, and wants to be able to transport Ty around to wherever. Sit down and calculate the price of a car, Korean Driver's License and testing, collision insurance, medical insurance versus the cost of a taxi X the number of days a week you would require transportation that could not be filled by dirt cheap bus fares and the subway. You will find that unless you have more money to spend than the average enlisted person, you would be MORE THAN FOOLISH to get a car.
All this EXCLUDING the fact that driving in Korea is inherently dangerous, due to density of traffic, predjuice against Foreign Drivers, lack of rule enforcement, inexperienced Korean drivers, unfamiliar foreign drivers, Unfamiliar Road Signs, and kamikaze motorcycles and motorbikes. Not to mention lack of parking and Expensive parking. Am I trying to discourage you? You bet! I have driven in Korea for over 7 years, and still do as a part of my job. I have never contacted another vehicle, moving or parked, in those years. But, boy, have I come close! May your luck be as good, if you decide to ignore my warnings. |

Re: driving-car question
Is it possible for my wife who is NCS to obtain a drivers license?
If so, what are the steps we should take to obtain it when we arrive? |

Are you talking about a Korean DL? Or the USFK licence?

Re: driving-car question
Korean DL or a USFK one, which ever one is attainable for a NCS spouse.

Re: driving-car question
Anyone can go get a Korean DL.
USFK is different, depending on rank will determine if she can get a USFK DL. E-7 through E-9 is a letter from you commander to the DL testing facility. O-1 through o-10 same as above. Any rank, command sponsored letter to DL facility for spouse.
