Cell phones...
My husband has a cell phone he bought off base where he just buys minutes. I'm wondering when I arrive there I plan on getting one too. I heard they have LG at the BX where you can buy a family plan? Anyone know how much that costs? Which is a better way..to just buy a phone where you buy minutes or go with the LG family plan? I guess I'm looking for something like Verizon or Tmobile here in the states.
Thanks!! ~Dez |

Re: Cell phones...
I would never buy a phone on base....you can get a family plan downtown and the best thing is you can hagel for a better price downtown...and the varity of phones are better.

Re: Cell phones...
Which one is better as far as card phone or contract phones just depends on how often you'll use it. My husband has a LG contract phone that he pays between $50-60 a month on. I don't know how many hours he gets but he talks a lot on it with work. I use a SK prepaid card phone. You have to buy a $10 SK phone card with it that is 30 minutes just to use the phone. But then I buy this other card that is also $10 but it has over 200 minutes. So, I use the SK card just to make my phone work and then I make calls on the 200 minute card. I've probably spent less than $60 over the last year making calls this way because I don't use my cell that much. I doubt you will find any plans like they have in states here. Unless they've changed in the last 18 months when we got our phones. They don't do things like free mobile to mobile or free nights and weekends. They sell you a contract that gives you so many hours to use on weekdays and so many hours to use on weekends. I'm not sure about a family plan.

Re: Cell phones...
I'm with Chuck on this one.. we found our phones downtown and got a much better deal than we would have gotten through the LG booth on base.
Nearlywild has a point, though...if you're anticipating using a lot of minutes monthly, you might be better off with a plan phone over a prepaid. We only used our cells for local calls, and usually sparingly, so we spent far less on prepaid than we would have on a plan. Take a look at how much you think you'll be needing/using your phones, and use that as a basis for what's best for you. Also compare prices, and look around, you don't have to lock yourself into a plan the day you arrive. Dee :) |

Re: Cell phones...
The only thing good about the phone place on post is thier calling card. I think it is the Victory II card. $20 gets you 280 minutes to the states, $10 gets you 140 minutes.
When I had my card phone, i also had to buy the $10 for 30 minute card and then buy the Victory II card to call the states. Another thing I liked was that it was a rechargeable card, go back to them and say you want $20 on your phone, they go into the computer and recharge your card. They programed the cards PIN# into my phone so I could speed dial the card # and then just dial the number in the states.

I still have to buy the 30 minute blue SK card to keep loaded on the phone but then I use another card when I actually make calls. It's white with a big C in center of the card, a picture of a cell phone is on the right side of the C and on the left is an orange flower. The upper left corner has the word PRISM. The upper right corner says 11,000 won. I buy it from the little shop that is right on the corner on the right side of road directly across from the walk thru gate. She charges 10000 won even though the card says 11000. I hope that wasn't too confusing. A friend showed me how to do it.

Re: Cell phones...
If you buy a plan on base its not really a plan...you just pay for pre-paid mins every month and if you run out of mins then you have to go buy another phone card...just buy a used phone downtown for a lot less then you would pay on base...you can get phone for like as little as $40. There are plenty of phone places right off base, I doubt that you'll have a problem finding a place to buy phone cards and a phone.

Re: Cell phones...
Actually, you can buy an actual plan w/so many minutes a month. If you go over your minutes..you pay more than your monthly plan rate. Just like in the states. They offer plan phones on and off post. My husband has had a prepaid phone for the last 8 months and he'll be switching to a plan phone. It's very inconvenient when you need to call a solider and you run out of won.
We're going to do the same as Nearly. He'll have a plan phone and I'll have a prepaid. In MY opinion that's the way to go:)

Re: Cell phones...
hmmm...maybe I got ripped off. I just bought a cell phone at the BX for $75. It has a camera and it actually works which is better than the first one someone gave me. I went to the local place near my house and no one spoke english. I finally got someone to translate and they said I could not keep my same phone number. The place on base was able to change my phone and keep the same the number so I went with them.
I have Vonage to call the states and I use my cell phone only when I am out to make local calls. I also use my Vonage for local calls, its only .06 cents a minute. I hate that I only get 30 mins for $10. I am always running out. I have to find that 200 min place. Do they have one near Osan?? |
