2. During the research of family support system in 2nd ID area I couldn't find any due to the fact that the area is still considered as the NCS area. They just start giving CS slots to a few (enlisted) Soldiers in condition of leaving Soldiers' dependents in area II. Even though I get approved to move my family closer to my base in the North later on, I am not comfortable with leaving my family in the location without family support system; my wife is still considered as a new military spouse and she has a new-born baby to take care of during weekdays.
Getting approval for a CS family to live in Area I requires an exception to policy request. I only know of a few people who have requested them, but I don't think they are hard to get.

I'm not sure what you consider to be lacking in terms of family support. Of course, compared to Yongsan, there are fewer spouses living in Uijongbu, but there still are several hundred living there (probably over a thousand). There is a nice commissary, a clinic, library, gym/pool, gas station, etc. The PX isn't as big as Yongsan's though.

In some ways, because it's a smaller base in a smaller city, it's actually easier for some spouses.

In terms of housing - it's the same as Seoul - with modern apartment complexes all over the place. The air is a lot cleaner. It's not as congested (but still has plenty of traffic by most American standards).

I think you should remain open minded about it and wait and see for yourself before making a decision.

Willy, as always, thank you for your thorough reply. When I mentioned "lack of family support," I specifically meant CDC and pediatrician in clinic, which lack in TDC area. My wife works at home and has to rely on CDC more than anyone. As far as Comm and PX stuff, she can survive without them since she has experience working as a foreign teacher in Korea several years ago.

Re: Finally in Korea!

Hey, are you in Area 1 yet? If not, there are tons of new apartments they are constructing right by the subway in Uijeonbu. I don't know if they're done yet though. I've heard a rumor that they raised OHA allowance for the Uijeonbu area too. If you are here, do you know about the Pear Blossom Cottage (PBC)? It's a place for wives to go during the day, they have a play area for the kids, cooking classes and tours for the adults. Also, May 9th is supposed to be Bunko night at Casey. It was fun last time and you're welcome to join. It should be announced in the new "In The Zone".

If you come here with an open heart and open mind, I think your wife will be ok. I don't know much about military wives and being cliquey but I assure you I could never be that way and laugh at the one's that ARE like that.

We've been in our apartment a few weeks now.. It's very close to Lotte Mart, I could see it if it weren't for the other bldg right next to me.. LOL

I've been to Pear Blossom a couple times, went there yesterday. I have my license now so once we get a car, I can most likely go more often..

Not sure about the OHA allowance raise.. I haven't really asked about it. I know it was cut in half once we were here instead of Seoul..

Thanks for the invitation to Bunko But that night is the Signal Ball down in Seoul.. That was very nice of you to ask though, trust me, I most likely would because I'm REALLLLLy needing to meet some friends here.
