Looking for a job
Hi everybody !
I joined this forum to get some advice... My boyfriend will be deployed in Osan Air Base for a year and I wonder if I could find a job in the area. We're yot yet ready to get married (one day!!!), but I'd really like to follow him in South Korea, then in the US... Do most of you guys work over there ??? Do you know what kind of job I could find? I have a Bachelor degree in History (this year I'm working on my Master degree) and I've been working for French Air Force for six years. My English is not too bad and I'm really motivated to find a job. I wish you could help me! Thanx Morgane |

Re: Looking for a job
The biggest problem would be paying rent while you are here. The average place runs from $700 up to $2000+ depending on what you want.
As for finding a job over here it is hard to find a job on-post unless you are already in a GS position and can transfer over here. Off post i'm not sure of but know you need special visa's to do that.

Re: Looking for a job
If you are not married to this man and are not a US citizen, getting a job on base will be very difficult ~ because you would have to compete for jobs with the Koreans, and they will almost always get preference.
You're only real option would be to work for a French or Korean company. Perhaps you could teach French? There might be some jobs available doing that. |

Re: Looking for a job
Thank you guys for your advice!
About the visa I learnt that I'll be able to get it if I have an employment offer. I know it will be hard but I'll keep working on it! Thanks again. ![]() |

Re: Looking for a job
I am a military spouse over here in Korea. I am ncs and I have a job and my job provides housing allowance. There are also lots of jobs that provide you with housing. Though I don't know if you'll be able to live with your boyfriend. I know if can be done. And the money is good!! I teach english part-time and I make about $40 an hour. If you want more info just let me know! And good luck!

Re: Looking for a job
I don't know what "NCS" is ... What you say looks very interseting! To live together off-base, my boyfriend will have to ask, but even if we can't, I still want to come in South Korea.
I have read that only native English speaker can teach, is it true?? Unfortunately, people doesn't seem to be very interested in learning French... I would be glad to be able to send a resume for the same job that you have! Thanx for your information. ![]() Last edited by morgane : 05-30-2008 at 01:37 AM. Reason: othograph ! |

While Morgane's situation is different, and she's not entitled to any military entitlements as a girlfriend...you,as a spouse, even an NCS spouse, are. You mentioned that your job provides a housing allowance.. You -do- realize that you are entitled to OHA through your AD husband? All he has to do is go in and fill out the paperwork, and you should be receiving OHA at the with dependent rate. Forgive me interrupting the ongoing thread, but from what you had said, I wasn't certain if you were receiving OHA as well as your job provided housing allowance, and I'd hate to see you lose a sizeable entitlement due you! :) Dee :) |

Re: Looking for a job
And what about the Youth Center??? I saw it on the base website .
I have an experience with the youth since a few years, working weekly for a non-profite organization : help for homework and fun activities. What do you think about that? |

Re: Looking for a job
MSJROD-
Sorry to be another jump-in thread, but we will be arriving in July NCS and I am very interested in working p/t while we are there. I have a BA and am halfway through my MA in library studies... can you pass along more info about teaching over there? Thank you! |

The jobs there are for people who basically fall into two categories: 1. USFK employees and their dependents 2. Local nationals (Koreans) You are not eligible for jobs that are filled by category #1. You might be eligible for jobs in category #2, but Koreans have preference. In other words, if there is not a Korean person who wants a particular job, then foreign nationals from other countries can then be offered that job. But that would be a fairly rare scenario. Having said this... if you could somehow get work there as an unpaid volunteer...who knows...maybe you could get hired on as a paid employee. Stranger things have happened. |
