Re: Anxious, Sad, Confused.. Any help greatly appreciated.

Pack your bags....it's not hard to come over here...but you will need to have at least a few thousand$$$ in your bank accout...for the plane ticket and the first months rent...Believe me when I say your not the first NCS wife to come over here, make it and enjoy it....

Household goods will be shipped by him with his 500lbs, but if you are just married the both of you should not have have a problem moving over here as you may not have much..bring what you can in your suitcase...you'll be amazed what people will give you and or how cheap they will sell it to you.

Pack your bags and be happy together here in Korea....

But I would wait until he is established in his unit before coming over here...

What my illustrious brother said! :)

I did it, survived it, lived to get the t-shirt,and count the entire experience as one of the best I've ever had.. no regrets at all! :)

And if you're a young couple without kids.. it's probably the best time for something like this as a) you can live cheaply, and b) you don't have to worry about things like schools, etc. for your kids! :)

Oh,and check out my longer post in the "Vent thread".. I kind of combined a response to this thread in my response there :)

Yeah, it's getting late here, and I've gotten blonder :)

Re: Anxious, Sad, Confused.. Any help greatly appreciated.

They have really said some great things on here. I am here NCS and though i'm just getting settled in (and about to leave) and I am glad that I came and not looking forward to the reality of going back to the states.

Though I don't live with my husband, I do get to see him every week and we have had a great time while being here. We don't have a car here and that is fine! I spend about $20 a week for transportation $50 if I go on a trip somewhere (by bus or train). Do you have a degree? If so, you can easily find a job teaching somewhere and the money is great!

If you don't have a real connection with your thing sell them before you come (a great way for extra money to travel with), and just ship your clothes and other necessity. That is what we did. My husband came two months before me. He packed some stuff and it was shipped by the military. I keep what I need for the time, then picked up the rest of my things when I got here.

I don't need any furniture, I live in a fully furnished studio apartment for $1000 and it includes everything. But you can find 1+ bedrooms with the same. I personally think it's so much easier than the hassle of packing, shipping, and, unpacking. (on a side note: we had our stuff in storage, but it wasn't worth it, we would have paid for our couch three times over-in one year-to keep it in storage; instead we sold just about everything and had a "wad" of "pocket change").

So...even is you don't get command sponsored, just start making arrangements to come NCS.

Oh...we don't have any kids (out the womb yet...haha). And the only real problem was banking (because I get paid in cash, and don't have a bank here in korea). Otherwise you're good! i've said too much, and it's late, hope it makes sense.

happy trails.....

Re: Anxious, Sad, Confused.. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for everyone's advice and help. I greatly GREATLY appreciate it and it is nice to be able to talk to people who have experianced it as well.
Do any of you know how hard it would be for my husband to live off post? That is also one of his concerns is that I would get there, and he wouldn't be able to come home at all..
Thank you again everyone! =o)

I must agree wholeheartedly!
There have been a lot of ladies who have had good luck recently in coming over and joining their spouses with very few major problems. But it has been just as I say-GOOD LUCK.

You might NOT always be so lucky! Assignments change. Some people come to Seoul and get sent out to Wonju or outlying areas which have no schools or big hospitals, and you indeed may need to live a great distance from your husband if you have children or personal needs that require being near a hospital, etc. Waiting a short time until he is settled is the most intelligent thing to do, believe me, this is experience talking. Living away from an English speaking area, in an unfamiliar town is in no way easy or comfortable, and is to be avoided by foreign spouses; Korean speaking spouses, come on over.

go to sims and find out his pint-point orders. Then you have a better idea of where you are going. the more south the better.

What is sims.....and if your Army your pinpoint is Youngsan (unless you are very special) then from there depending on who needs you is where you get your actual pin-point orders to where you are going...

I wanted to add that being part of the 501st MI BDE does not guarantee he will be in Yongsan. They have part of the unit down in Humphreys. Just a thought.

The 501st has field offices all over Korea - some of them in rather remote places. And yes indeed - regardless of what anyone says (or what the sms system indicates) - when he arrives he'll go where the S1 and CSM(s) decides he is most needed, and that could easily be different than what the sms has listed.

I'm not saying this to add more confusion or anxiety to Parkerswife's decision - it's just the reality of the situation.

Having said all this - if you're the least bit adventurous - you can follow your hubby anywhere and get by just fine - even if it's a little hick town out in the middle of nowhere.
