Pet Peddler?

Our precious, healthy and happy little pup's recent first "birthday" brought a question/curiousity to thought.....

Is the vendor that used to sell the dogs and kittens in cardboard boxes across the street from the Osan main gate still there? I know when we were leaving, there was a lot of discussion about the base either making him offlimits, or working with the city of Pyongtaek to get him off the streets completely, but I hadn't heard any follow-ups!

Some of the stuff I saw from and about that man absolutely broke my heart... The horror stories were just *awful*. We hated the idea of giving the man any money at all, but wanted very much to at least try to "rescue" one of the animals from the abuse we'd seen, and truthfully weren't expecting to be able to do more than just offer the dog comfort before he became ill, as so many of those dogs do. We were blessed that our puppy ended up being healthy, and was too young to have been abused for long, so we didn't have to deal with any existing behavioral problems either. Sascha's now a year old,and doing very well...healthy and enjoying life, with a rather big yard to play in! (LOL..and yes, Kristin , he's -finally- outside trained instead of the pad training we had to do for him while he was in our Korean apartment. :))

That was probably the one "cultural difference" about Korea that I could never accept or at least appreciate!

Dee :)

Re: Pet Peddler?

i saw a dog meat the other day in market for sale and next to that they were selling pups and kittens. It was sad. Even though i did hear that dog meant is not as common as we Americans think and that most Koreans have small pets of their own.

Re: Pet Peddler?

Went to Osan last month. There was a guy there about 2 blocks off base with several beagle pups cramped into a bird cage. Hubby had to get me out of there before I went ballistic. I'd say odds are good that is your man, or someone else has sprung up to take his place.

Re: Pet Peddler?

The week before I left I saw him out there with cats. I really hate that man. Hey with all the nasty parvo, I don't blame you for keeping him inside!

Re: Pet Peddler?

He's mostly been gone. He left shortly after the front page article in the paper was about him and how sickly his pets are.

But I've seen him a few times the last couple of weeks. The dogs seem sicker than before, if that's even possible. It's sad.
