Re: Non Command Sponsored
YES! It took me four days but I finally read the entire thread about being Non-command sponsored.
My husband has orders for Osan and we put in all of our paperwork to go CS. Yesterday, we heard from our med group that the Osan pediatrician indicated that they will not be able to support my son because once a year he will need an echocardiogram from a pediatric cardiologist. Interestingly enough, most AF bases can't support that either and have to send us off base to get that done. (That's what we had to do while here at this base) So it seems that we will not be able to get command sponsored and have decided to go NCS. Although I have read all of the NCS posts, I am still a bit confused and wondered if anyone could help clarify some info. 1) Are E-7s at Osan normally granted permission to live off base? 2) What is the weight allowance? We found this on the Osan website..."In addition, the service member's household goods shipping allowance is limited to either unaccompanied hold baggage allowance or 10% of the sponsor's JFTR weight allowance." Does anyone know if you have a choice or does TMO make the decision? 3) We are still pretty confused about TMO storing our HHG...do they store it for us or do we have to find somewhere to store our HHG and pay for it? 4) Just to clarify, NCS receives OHA with dependent rate. I am hoping I am correct on this but correct me if I am wrong. 5) I checked the Overseas Cola query and was wondering if we are NCS and AD hubby is authorized to live off base, does he get COLA with or w/o dependent rate? Sorry to bother y'all with questions you have already answered, but I was still a little confused with all the posts. Thanks in advance for all your help and this forum is truly invaluable to all of us who use it. ~Naomi |

Re: Non Command Sponsored
Hope this clears it up a little---
The commander stated that he is currently monitoring incoming command sponsored and based on each individual situation making a determination whether or not they can have concurrent travel (I think right now the crunch is more for the medical services and school issues rather than housing)--I believe in the past non-concurrent travel has been enforced based on lack of housing availability--we were even told when we got our CS to Korea that it could be non-concurrent travel up to 20 weeks ( meaning that we could possibly have to wait stateside until the command determined we could come over). When we were PCSing to Europe back in the mid-90s we were also told that concurrent travel was not necessarily guaranteed. Again--the high school is pretty much "maxed out" until the middle school is completed and they are in the midst of a huge medical/dental changeover. So to be on the safe side--if you have CS orders I would still check with your local base to see what your orders say--concurrent travel authorized or not. |

Re: Non Command Sponsored
Hey guys,
I've been reading this thread for a few days now, and I'm only on page 40. :p My husband has been in Korea since late April of this year, and we have been waiting for Non-command sponsorship for about 3 or 4 weeks now. We are definitely hoping that it gets approved, and we have been told that it looks as though it will, but it hasn't yet. I do have one question for right now though. When I arrive in ICN, what exactly will I need to show Customs, other than my passport? I had to send my passport in recently to get my maiden name changed to my married name, and it should be here within a few weeks. I'm not sure exactly when, but if we are granted NCS (meaning my husband is given permission to reside off post), we would like for me to come in October. I don't know if I will be able to get my A-3 Visa by then, so we just plan on getting it once I am already in Korea. Without a visa, what paperwork will I need to show customs? Thank you all so much for the help you've already provided me. -Hilary |

Re: Non Command Sponsored
Hello again, I'm sorry but someone if feeding you a line of total BS!!!!
Your husband is NOT GRANTED NCS, if you move here you are NCS no matter what paperwork is signed. Are you sure you don't mean CS?

Re: Non Command Sponsored
We've applied for CS, and we were denied, so my husband was told that the "paperwork" was put in for NCS, which we assumed meant permission for him to reside off post.

Re: Non Command Sponsored
Hi there. Like Chuck said you don't get granted NCS status, but yes he can apply to live off base.
Guys, I have often wondered this myself, do you think you are more likely to be approved to live off base if the person you are planning to live with is in country? Just curious. |

Chuck and SLC are absolutely 100% correct. You are not -granted- NCS, there's no paperwork to get NCS status. He may have applied to live off base, but that's very different than getting any NCS status. It sounds like someone's really been doing a number on you, and has been since day 1. And SLC, -yes-, I think you're more likely to be approved to live off base if your significant other is in country. I think it's kind of more..tangible.. if someone's there with you, harder to write off than just paperwork , if that makes sense? :) Dee :) |

Re: Non Command Sponsored
Thanks guys -- I completely understand that you are not "granted" NCS, but when I say that, I do mean that the paperwork to live off post is approved. Many people in his CoC have told him that as long as he gets the approval to live off post, I can move there NCS, no problem.
I do agree that it is probably more likely for him to be approved to live off post if I were there, but being that we tried that once, and it worked out horribly, I don't want to give that another go. Also, not sure if you guys just weren't sure, or if you didn't see that part of my post, but I was also wondering about when I arrive in ICN. What exactly will I need to show Customs, other than my passport? I had to send my passport in recently to get my maiden name changed to my married name, and it should be here within a few weeks. I'm not sure exactly when, but if my husband is given permission to reside off post, we would like for me to come in October. I don't know if I will be able to get my A-3 Visa by then, so we just plan on getting it once I am already in Korea. Without a visa, what paperwork will I need to show customs? Thanks again. ![]() |
