Re: Non Command Sponsored

I was under the impression that you oculd only use those if you were command sponsored-- so I don't know. However, even if you can use them, you will still need to get an A-3 korean visa, which is free. Also, I've been told that you cannot use the no-fee passports to visit any other country-- but only for travel inside the country your husband is stationed at.

Can I use these passports to go visit and/or stay in Korea NCS?

I called the local base's passenger terminal and they really had no clue, which I guess is good because if we end up finding a way to get over there Space-A with the CS letter than it wouldn't be a problem.

Our names are on my husband's orders, but the "unaccompanied" box is checked.

As far as I can interpret it, it just means that we're only allowed to use the passports to live abroad if our sponsor is living abroad, which he will be, and it doesn't specify whether we need to be command sponsored or where we are allowed to live. It would be nice to not have to pay out of pocket for passports when we have these already...

Thanks for any info!

Kara

My wife and son are here on the free passport's. Their names are not on my orders and they got to Korea just fine.

I'm also NCS.

Space-A Travel

I think I might have asked this before, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself.

I'm trying to find a way to get over via Space-A flying. Has anyone had success getting to Osan Space-A with a CS letter as NCS dependents?

The hitch I'm running into is that it seems that you have to be manifested from your originating base to Osan and your flights have to have the same mission number. So, you can't just hop from place to place trying to find somewhere that will go to your destination.

I'm wondering if the commander, were he or she kind enough, would be able to put in the letter that we are permitted to stop at so-and-so or this-and-that a place, if we knew we could get to one place that could put us through to the final destination. For example, if I could get to Guam and I knew there were flights from Guam to Osan.

And if not, where did you find the cheapest fares? I'll have myself, a five year old, a two year old, and a baby (she's eight months now). Did you buy one-way tickets or round trip tickets and if you bought round trip tickets is your return date changeable?

Thanks!

Kara

My understanding of the Space-A is that you can't use it to come here. If I remember correctly, you can't fly without the military member CONUS to OCONUS at all. They apparently do have an exception to the policy, that is just for Korea, if you are just coming to visit for less than 30 days. You can get a letter from the commander and visit once a year flying Space-A. I've been told that if you stay longer than 30 days they will charge you for the flight.

It's been so long since I've researched flying Space-A, I may be wrong. Things change all the time. Have you been to these websites?

Re: Non Command Sponsored

I have a question for you guys.
There are only two bases that my husband can be stationed at, and Osan is one of them. So there is a pretty good chance he will go eventually.
My question is this. I know it is rare to get CS below E6, but are there exceptions? For instance I have a neuro/muscular disease which makes me unable to drive and such like that. Would that make any difference in being able to get CS?

Welcome to the site, I'm sorry about your disease.....

I would be more worried if any hospital would beable to take care of me while over here.

That would not hinder you getting CS though.......

Would it be a circumstance that could help get CS though? Or is rank the only factor?

If they do not have the facilities to take care of you....then you may not beable to even come over here.....I don't know the full circumstances but they do not have the advanced medical facilities over here.

Rank does and does not have to do with getting CS, i've seen E-4's with CS.

It also depends on if there is a "CS SLOT" for your husband.
