Dee,
Here's the link to the regulation reference in the Joint Federal Travel Regulation. Sorry it took so long to reply. I also attached a copy of the change. Hope this helps... http://141.116.74.201/regs/Immediate/UTD86-05E.pdf Tap |

Thank you :)
Thank you, Tap, for the info! :)
You have no idea how grateful my hubby and I are! This is, of course, a stressful time in getting all our stuff together, but hopefully, thanks to the great information we're getting from you and others like you who are willing to offer their expertise, I'm at least maintaining my sanity.. *G* what little I had to begin with, that is :) Hopefully, your assignment will come through and you and the fam will be on the way to Osan soon...we'd love to have you over for dinner, in thanks! Merci beaucoup, my friend! :) Dee (and Richard, too) |

I will try to "bottle up" the info in this post and post it into an article soon! I was writing a "Osan Air Base Survival" guide and I will add all of this info to it! Great info guys!

Great idea :)
Mike,
I think that'd be an awesome idea! :) I'm considering doing a website for non-command sponsored wives, with information such as this, so maybe if you do, when/if I do... I could link with yours? :) Also, does anyone know if there's any sort of "support group" for Non-Command sponsored spouses there? If not, is there any interest in that sort of thing? If nothing else, we can share info, and maybe go hit the new chili's once a month or so... :) If there's interest, I'm thinking of trying to get something together when I get there... Thanks, Dee :) |

Dee, regardless of sponsorship the enlisted and officer spouses' clubs are located at Osan and are great for spouses. If you build your site, I can help you integrate a forum. If you want I can create a "Spouses Club" or "Non-command Club" on this forum and it can be a good beginning for you.
You can link to anything on this site or any other site I create. ![]()

I just wanted to say hello and thank everyone for all the useful/helpful information that I've read making our move and my transition easier. A friend of mine referred me to this site and I'm ever so thankful.
My husband has orders to Osan with an August RNLTD and I'll be separating in July. So we have a lot on our plate especially since he is currently deployed. I'm planning on joining him but like most of you not get command sponsored. This will be his 2nd tour to Osan; I was previously stationed at Kunsan so I know what to expect as an active duty military member but not as a dependent wife. I’d like to share with you all two sites that might come in handy to some. http://vonage.com/ and http://packet8.net/ these sites will allow you to have a stateside number while overseas. Both theses sites have been referred to me by friends currently in Osan and Kunsan and they love it. Preference is probably the biggest difference with the two companies. I hope someone finds use in the sites. I look forward to reading new posting. Again thank you and take care! Wishing you safe travels when the time comes.

Welcome Teresa, the only thing i'll with those sights is that they Vonage will not send what you need to an APO address (know this first hand).
But to get around that send it to someone in the states and then have then send it to you, then you just have to deal with the bill.... Or you can try the "change the APO to San Franciso" Here is what i mean, the last sentance in my address is: APO AP 96271 Here is what many people have done to get around the APO: San Francisco, 96271 Most people who do that get the mail.

I hope I'm not stepping on anyones toes with what I'm about to write...if so, I'll apologize in advance.
Speaking from experience...For overseas mail ...my current base is my only stateside base I've ever been at. I wouldnt change the city. When I was stationed in PACAF we always changed the AP to CA and when I was stationed in USAFE we always changed the AE to NY. Try that it should get your mail, etc...out there. Its a great little trick we learned when companies refused to mail to us or if they only had free shipping in the states. This also worked when I was deployed in Iraq. This is how my friends currently stationed in Kunsan and Osan are getting there equipment and bills from Vonage, etc...

Step-by-Step?
Wow. A wealth of knowledge lives out there. When I declared my intent, the responses I got was that "you'll have to come out of pocket". It was not moved by that argument since I have my finances straight up. Now I have been unsuccessful in getting unit support to move off base and warned of how ghosting is not allowed. Creates a bit of a predicament if you are earning OHA for your wife's apartment downtown while maintaining a dorm room on base. A peculiar situation.
Thanks to all for the info, but now can I squeeze some more out? From what I have read.... 1) Establish an apartment upon my arrival to Osan using current funds available in the piggy bank. Seek approval to move off base... if granted then who cares about the rest. 2) Upon my families arrival to Songtan I will need to inform both the housing office and finance so that the 90-day countdown can begin. 3) While the 90 days are being counted, I need to submit a DD Form 2367 so that on day 91 I begin to receive OHA. Meanwhile I am using the BAH rate for Barksdale. 4) After upsetting a few people and day 91 arriving, I begin to receive OHA and start to lose my Family Sep Allowance. Does this sound right? |
