Do one-third of the people do all the work?

This is one of my official rants.

It seems like 1/3 of people in an organization do all of the work. In almost every organization I have worked it always seems that you have to "all-stars" and hard workers do all of the work. In my view, most people fall into five categories.

1. All-stars. These people are the top 10% of any organization. They are not only hard workers, they are excellent at what they do. They win all the awards and move up fast in the organizations. Bosses wish very worker was an all-star.

2. Hard Workers. These fall into the top 25% of any work center. These people work the minute they arrive at work and stay until the work is done. They may not be all-stars, but they are dedicated and care about their output.

3. Average workers. These are the majority of workers. These guys show up exactly on time and leave at as soon as the schedule tells them. They simply show up, do there work and go home. They do not look for opportunities to shine.

4. Slug. These guys show up late at least one a week and look for ways to take long lunches and leave early. In the military they always seem to be on a waiver when it comes to PT. They are survivors and know how to avoid work, but are skillful at doing just enough to keep their job.

5. Clowns. These workers screw up almost daily and make up the bottom 5% of any organization. They are pushed on from organization to organization because no boss wants them. Bosses avoid giving these people work because they know the work will not get done.

In my opinion the all-stars, hard workers and some of the average workers to all of the work, but make up 1/3 of any organization. It is terrible because the best workers seem to get more work piled on them because bosses avoid giving real work to the slugs and clowns.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, there are slackers and hard workers. I don't think that 1/3 of people do all of the work, but I do think hard workers and all-stars do 125% the work they should have to do because they are often fixing the mistakes of slackers and idiots. Also, I would argue that hard work doesn't always get you moved up in a company. Sometimes, your hard work will keep you where you're at because they can't afford to have a slacker or even an average worker in your position.

It sounds to me that you've been putting in extra hours because of the slackers and idiots out there.

In some cases these so-called 'slugs and clowns' are buddy-buddy with the bosses and can get by with about anything. Or they are good at lying and manipulation that the boss does want to be bothered by them. Scream attorney, racism, sexiam, ageism, whatever 'ism' and get left along.

Not in my case. I have supervised/lead anywhere from 2 to 30 people in the last 5 years. This post is my observation over the years.

Are you talking 2-30 in the military or private sector? Are they in immediate location?

In the military. I am writing about my observations over the past 12 years. My current work section is included, but I am including all of my work places.

One thing that always seems to ring true is the workers that do the best work seem to have their work load increased.
