It doesn't hurt to have some gold or silver stashed away somewhere, every little bit will help.
Turk, it depends on what funds you put it in. I have the "L" 2010 fund which means it is VERY aggressive during the begining and around 2009 it starts backing off. Right now they do all the investing and I do nothing.

I know you should not look at your stock on a daily or even weekly or even a monthly basis but my fund is making between $5-$30 every single day. So i'm happy with that.

All I can say is buy Apple stock. I have been to two stores now and their Ipods are sold out. I am going to a third store tomorrow. They are also making a killing on selling their $1 songs.

Re: Investing

I wish they had the L funds when I was still in it. One year after the dot.com bust, all my contributions for the year were wiped out. I made out good enough in the end though. I have been tempted to buy a MAC and dump this PC several times in the recent past. There are rumors all over about the impending demise of the IPOD, (I don't believe it), but it seems Apple has been positioning to try and get back a larger piece of the home computer market. I love their commercials with the two guys, one playing a new PC and the other playing a new MAC. This investing stuff can be hazardous, thats why I only dabble in stocks. I have investments in a few currency funds, silver ETF, a couple gold mines and bullion. The reasoning is this: Stocks can be wiped out to virtual worthlessness but, gold and silver will always have value. With all the hububb about stocks and markets, the underlying pillar to watch carefully is the value of the US Dollar. Watch the US dollar Index and how it rises and dips against the feds actions.

Re: Investing

According to a recent VIX (volatility index) reading, this has been the most volatile market in the past 55 years. It's a good time to sit on cash until mid- August, September until the world, the Fed and other indicators hopefully take on a definite direction. For any of you out there who like to play around with penny stocks and other over the counter and bulletin board type investments I recommend you visit the web sight: Stock Patrol.com.

Here is a link to a good video series that tells about how private central banks came to control the money supply and influence the economy. Educational.

Re: Investing

I disagree about the TSP being a good deal. The rates of return available just reinforces my opinion that the government isn't good with money. The 10 year returns on the G & F funds are less than 6.5%, and none of the funds gets more than a 10% return on your investments.

It would be a good deal if you are a civilian and get matching funds, but since I'm active duty, the only benefit I see is being able to shelter combat zone and bonus money from future taxes on capital gains.

If you want an investment that you can do very little work and still be more agressive with your earnings, I would look at USAA investments. You can set up automatic deposits into your Roth IRA and invest it into a fund like the emerging markets fund that has a 22% return over the last 5 yrs.

Re: Investing

Even the most brilliant investors take occasional losses. It all depends on your individual intestinal fortitude for seeing your investments/speculations through the high and lows until you reach a goal. The G fund of the TSP is certainly the safest way to 'save money' and avoid losses though the returns will not come close to the potential returns of higher risk areas. Its all about how much you are willing to risk.

I agree Barnesnotnoble! How can everyone get matching fund except active duty military? We spend billions on foreign aid and waste billions on other areas, but we can't match 50% or %100 funds?

One way would be to start matching ONLY for re-enlistees. This would bring up the re-enlistment. Start with the enlisted and eventually offer for officers.
