Dispelling the myth: The U.S. is the homicide capital of the world

I hear all the time that the U.S. is a dangerous place to live. If you ask Koreans or Europeans they will tell you this. If you go to America be careful!

The U.S. is 6th in the world as far as total murders with 12,000, but what does that tell you? We have a much larger population than most of the world. Russia has a less population and is #2 with 28,000 and India is number one with 37,000.

Now take these numbers and look at it per capita (per 1,000) and they U.S. is no where near the top and is #24. Columbia is #1! Here are some other countries that you may be surprised that have more murders than the U.S. per capita.

Jamaica at #3. People this is a great tourist place. It is, just don't stray from the tourist areas.

Venezuela at #4. Yes, the socialist Hugo Chavez loves to slam the U.S., but you are more likely to be killed in his country than America.

Mexico at #6. No wonder millions of Mexicans are coming to the U.S!

Number 7-11. are Former Soviet states.

Are we noticing a trend? Communism, socialism and dictatorships = murder and free capitalist societies = less murder.

Thailand at #14. Love the food!

Poland at #20. Ive been there! Great place.

Where is South Korea? #38!

The safest place to live? Qatar at #62!

So, the next time your socialist friend tells you "America is the murder capital of the world," just laugh at him and send him a link to this thread.

The US is safer than most developing or unstable countries...

Now if you look at other first world countries, the US sticks out like a sore thumb. The closest first world country to us is Finland (#30). Only 6 spots away, but what is that difference in real numbers? Apparently a lot:

US (#24): 0.042802 per 1,000 people
Finland (#30): 0.0283362 per 1,000 people
Canada (#44): 0.0149063 per 1,000 people

For those who've never lived in the US, it's kind of hard to understand...

Yes - the murder rate is very high there. But generally speaking, the killing is very localized to certain locations (typically poor, inner-city neighborhoods). The tens of millions of people who don't live in these places are just as safe as the people who live in countries with very low murder rates like Finland.
