Are you happy with your job?
I love the Air Force, but I will most likely get out so I can work for myself. Job freedom has been my dream for the last few years.
Are you happy with your job? If you could open a small business, what would it be? Mike

I have one a friend who live in Texas. he says; "Engineer is very good job in U.S." He's a system administrator at Air Force in U.S.A So, I should like go to America. |

Re: Are you happy with your job?
shsong21 With your line of work as a Civilian you can make decent money. To work as a Sys Admin, Network Eng or Network Security for Army, Navy, Air Force a secret clearance is required. That is the reason the military does not off shore it's work. I work IT and a friend of mine went to work for Verizon Wireless and he is making over $60,000 with no CCNA or CCNP.
I love what I do and have done the small bussiness thing I think I will leave that to others as if you have employees it is hard to get going with any profit margin.

Re: Are you happy with your job?
I love my job. I work in logistics for a large retailer. My main job is to insure that we are in compliance with local, state, and federal laws. It's not an easy job and sometimes I have to butt heads with management because they want to do things one way and I have to tell them they can't unless they want to pay big fines. I have a lot of freedom in my job and I don't really have someone looking over shoulder. Usually it's me looking over someone else's shoulder. The company I work for is great, they let me take a leave of absence to move here to Korea. Sometimes I think about owning my own business and we might after my husbands retires. I'd like to open a liquor store.

I have many technology license such as Electronic, Communication. But Most Koreans are looking more important for scholastic than indivisual qualities. They will see whether your school is famous or no, and also wheather it's collage or University. I think it's very bad customs. How about in U.S. ? Are they prior to scholastic more important than indivisual qualities ? Last edited by shsong21 : 08-18-2006 at 01:55 AM. |

Re: Are you happy with your job?
shsong21 Some university degree is required usually but the current trend is experience and certifications mean just as much.
Example: Job requires BS degree in Computer Science or related field 5 years of experience as System admin using LINUX, Unix is acceptable. I see a lot of that in IT job advertisments lately.

Re: Are you happy with your job?
I have been employed in the IT field for several years. The IT field as you know is very diverse. I started as a PC Tech and am currently in the database development field. There is good money to be made if you have teh skills. I do not believe too much emphasis is placed on the school, rather the individual. If you are a programmer you usually drift the first 10 years bc of the pay. The majority find employment almost right out of school. This also depends on the area though.
I also work in a UNIX environment. I believe the primary reason for the recent UNIX/LINUX requisite is the majority of the individuals can claim Windows experience. How many can truthfully claim UNIX/LINUX. I can assure you the majority of the time is spent in a Windows enviroment, and I work in a very large office. Therefore to answer your question sshong yes you can find employment easy. You can also make a decent salary. If you work for a defense contractor you will likely need to obtain a security clearance.

Re: Are you happy with your job?
Hiker is correct in that the Workstations are almost all windows based. Most have servers based on Many Unix and Linux flavors sprinkled with windows servers. Most of the larger companies will use mostly Cisco Gear for the networks but you will see a lot of proprietay stuff mixed in As fare as IDS sensors etc. I think at times IT can be very interesting but when a company makes cuts they look to thin out sys admins/IT tech staff first then they end up highering back when they find out the staff was needed. I have not had that problem but several of my co workers and friends have some stories about the Tech bubble. I am sure Hiker can relate some frome his co workers.

Re: Are you happy with your job?
My idea of a great job after retirement would be a a "SUDS AND DUDS"
Have a beer while your doing your clothes at the Laundry Mat. This is fairly common in Virginia, and I've even been......ohhhh I mean I've seen them in Iowa. I LOVE my Army job and would do nothing else in the Army.

Re: Are you happy with your job?
For the most part, I really like my job in the Air Force, and I absolutely love being in the Air Force. They're going to have to shove me out while I'm kicking and screaming! As for a dream job afterwards, small business owner is definitely at the top of my list. I just have to narrow it down a bit. I want to own a DJ equipment and record store, a small bar, a huge nightclub, and a pet shop specializing in fish. Pretty diverse, eh? So yeah, it's about time to figure out what I want to do when I grow up :-)
