American Idol, European stupidity

If you did not know, American Idol ended this week with a new winner Taylor Hicks. Well, of course the Europeans have to write an article titled, "American Idol out votes the president." It is a clever way to show that Americans care about entertainment than politics. Here is their supporting data:

Quote:
Taylor Hicks, 29, emerged as the winner in the finale of the TV show on Wednesday night in which 63m votes were cast. It is the biggest single voting night in the five-season history of the show. In the 1984 US presidential election, 54.5 million voters backed Ronald Reagan - the most votes obtained by a president. British viewers can watch the show tonight on ITV2.
What the idiot writer from the Guardian fails to mention is that you can vote as many times as you wish on American idol and there are fans that vote thousands of times. In all likely about 10-20 million people voted in American Idol. If the newspaper did a 1-second Google search they may have found that 36 million people watched American Idol that night. While many of them vote, there are a lot that just watch and don't vote at all. There was even a special that showed voters using speed dials to be able to vote thousands of times. So, 36 million watched the show, but they received 63 million votes. You would think a college educated writer could have done the math.

A large number of people voted for American Idol, but not even close to the amount of people that voted for Ronald Reagan. Nice try Guardian!

sejongeb is an unknown quantity at this point
I would like to know why someone would actually vote for this stuff. I my be the 'odd' man out here, but this show has never impressed me much. I guess I've always had something better to when it airs. The Guardian actually a funny newspaper, from a political standpoint. Bell's cartoons are both humorous and offensive. I agree that the reporters view is one sided and leaves out a few details. Maybe he can work for CNN or Fox News. I'm glad the show over for the season.
