Re: Sunshine policy
He probably retired because of the nuke test. The Sunshine Policy was a terrible idea in my opinion.

Re: Sunshine policy
I don't --- well - didn't think the Sunshine Policy was a bad idea in 1998 when Kim Dae Jung tried it.
By 2000, I was hoping SK would require more reciprosity in it, but I was willing to give them the chance to make it work. By 2002, I thought South Korea had lost its way and was simply doing what one of the key foundations for the policy had always been --- keeping the North alive. (Remember, the policy was also a direct product of the 1997 Asian financial meltdown - commonly known in South Korea as the I-aM-F crisis). And since 2003, I have felt South Korea should be ashamed of its Sunshine policy, because it has been nothing more than a "keep Kim Jong Il in power policy" void of morality as well as real value for South Korea as a nation beyond a superficial look at what might happen if the North does collapse. |

Re: Sunshine policy
I agree, it was a good thing to try, but not make a 10 year policy after all of the things Kim Jong-il has pulled. Trying to improve the North Korea economy is a smart thing to do. But much like sending billions of aid to Africa, corruption and the lack of accounting makes it a failure.
