Google will map the Universe!

Pretty interesting! I love Google Earth and this should be another major break through for Google.
A UA-designed breakthrough telescope project that promises to scan the entire visible sky every three nights has snared Google to manage the volumes of data its 3 billion pixel digital camera will generate.

The Internet search giant announced Friday it has joined the Tucson-based Large Synoptic Survey Telescope consortium, with plans to organize the overwhelming 30,000 gigabytes of data the scope is expected to produce every night. The data will be analyzed constantly, with all information available to the public.

"The expertise they bring to the project is handling these huge amounts of data," said Suzanne Jacoby, LSST project coordinator. "They're pioneering that in volumes of data that most projects haven't dreamed about."

William Coughran, Google vice president of engineering, said in a press release the LSST is a good fit for the company.

"Google's mission is to take the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," he said. "The data from LSST will be an important part of the world's information, and by being involved in the project we hope to make it easier for that data to become accessible and useful."
